the nvme controller and storing files through the VM on the nvme based netatalk server running in the FreeBSD VM is much much faster than APFS and allows for the caching mechanism on the CPU cores to actually benefit the USER and not Apple. #fuck

My lab project capacity has exploded since I started using LLMs. Latest most interesting was setting up a FreeBSD virtual machine natively on Apple Silicon as a PoC to get faster storage running netatalk on the same storage but in FreeBSD vs. built-APFS and IT WORKED.

The best part of this is that mdfind is
generally faster than find in Darwin and actually taps into APFS where as find JUST uses extents and has to make not-POSIX api call to get at extended attributes.

But sure apply Linux thinking to MacOS🫡

🥶
I asked this person to show me where I’m going awry and I can’t wait to see how he beats the slowness of APFS
with ‘find’, also never minding that I was using an LLM to show it’s straightforward as fuck to use
them to solve real problems but people want to swing their dicks around.
shocking , almost as much as using llm to
write "find -exec" command
(resource wize id just rtfm tbh)

yes but your back of the napkin analysis ignores the fact that when you’re dealing with any significantly large number of files ON A MAC that is not Linux and that doing a find -exec in Darwin still subject you to a thread blocking slowdown because everything in APFS is at the end of a long b-tree.

If you have some free space on your current Mac, you can make a new partition and install it there.

idk how recently this became possible (maybe since APFS?) but it's surprisingly easy and been handy for testing

After #trashCan Mac pro, I swore off new Mac Pros.

After the keyboards disaster on my late 2010s $3500 MacBook Pro, no more Apple laptops.

After 5 years of fighting #APFS - fuck #AppleSilicon Macs.

Got rid of #touchID? Fuck you also again.

I've discovered that #Netatalk mostly outperforms #APFS when the file server is running #Core2Duo or better as long as the netatalk/afp host has gigabit ethernet.

A 2010 Mac mini running #Debian 13 serving ~1 million files outperforms #APFS wish the same workload by about 1000 times. (2/2)

So... I so ❤️ #Linux.

I just do. I've used it for 30 years and NOW... in 2025... it's making my #MacOS much more tolerable.

My followers might recall that I whine like a little you know what about #APFS and how it basically knee-caps #AppleSilicon.

So now... (1/2)
Here’s a hint for Apple to help their users get around stupid limitations in the GUI.

Apple could do this for customers in a week but won’t because they don’t want people LIKE ME to productive on Macs because Hollywood.

Who is going to bid/win this contract with DHS(most likely ICE) for "management, transportation, and the escort of non-citizens in a secure manner within the U.S." for LA.

It's worth $100 Million and will last 5 years.

What if your device's frame could sense when you need it propped up—and just do it? APFS embeds shape-memory actuators into the perimeter, creating morphing support geometry that responds to context. No external stands, no accessories, just architectural empathy.

It's strangely difficult to mount a .dmg imaged from a drive containing encrypted APFS volumes, but I think I finally figured it out:

1) hdiutil attach -noverify -nomount Image.dmg
2) diskutil apfs unlockVolume disk5s1 -passphrase password

Something about the encryption gets macOS really confused.

I have found a way. When the game is on an APFS volume (on my Mac), it will not work. ith an exFAT volume, it works. Thank you

Syncthing is neat, but I swear “normal” users want the feel of the StrongSync WebDAV client’s use of APFS NSFileCoordinator to transparently ensure local sync. Offline? Online? VFS just makes posix file operations do the right thing.
(Where by “normal”, I apparently mean blissfully ignorant of […]

While we're looking, also worth remembering how long it took this Arteta team to get back into regular CL contention, and how much pressure he was under. And then how tough (and expensive) it's been to uplift to “compete on all fronts” title contention.
