You could pay Google $20 a month to lie to you about whether or not packages got delivered to your house.

Or you could pay me a mere $10 a month to doodle your fursona with a giant fucking cock.

Which seems like the better investment?

There is a MASSIVE amount of conversation about this!

It's just happening in corners of the Internet that AI evangelists are not paying attention to, because those corners have concluded that modern AI systems as developed and deployed today are fundamentally exploitative.

#AIBullshit
I hope as we move past the first wave of AI criticism ("it doesn't work, all hype") we get a new wave of AI criticism rooted in the acknowledgement that, yes, these systems are very powerful & quite useful and focusing a deep exploration of when AI uses are uplifting and when they are detrimental.

There's no way that ChatGPT could do this tho because of the chargeback risks that are definitely a real thing that exist. /sarcasm

not going to lie, I'm a little bit disappointed in this piece's conclusion that there is nothing that anypony can do about this.

There are thing you can do, individual actions that will not fix everything, but will make some parts of the Internet better, and John should call them out.

Every once and a while I worry I'm in a bubble and most users actually love AI, and stories like this are oddly comforting because there's no clearer sign that users all fkn hate your shit than a product team needing to force everypony to use it, and then hiding the way to turn it off.

First of all: Nightmare

Second of all: OH, so to kill the AI malarkey - it's just a user-side toggle?? One that they clearly *can* implement?? But only *will* implement, on a user-by-user basis if that user threaten the full weight of legal consequence upon top-level employees??

That sucks so much
I want to share my experience today with Google support, trying to get Gemini (their AI/plagiarism machine) turned off in my Google workspace account. That account is where I personally do all my work communication—I am an editor, and most of my work contracts explicitly ban any use of Generative AI

Volume doesn't equal quality.

And remember that all current generative "AI" was created using plagiarism -- as their creators admit.

I know this is discouraging but readers want good stories, not derivatives
