Dr. Charles Henry Turner was from Ohio; he earned a BSc and MSc from the University of Cincinnati. He was the first African American to earn a PhD in #entomology, which was at the University of Chicago in 1907.

Dr. Harris served in one of the first Black Marine Corps, the #Montfort Point Marines. His work on #Medfly used biological control & sterile males; Dr Harris developed an effective management system.

Dr. Willie Hobbs Moore was born in Atlantic City NJ, and went on to study protein spectroscopy and work on polymers. She was the African American woman to earn a PhD in physics!

Dr. St. Elmo Brady earned an MSc and PhD in #chemistry from the University of Illinois. He studied divalent oxygen atoms, and later went on to research #infrared #spectroscopy and organic acids.

Dr. Edward Bouchet was from Connecticut, the first African American to earn a PhD in #Physics (in 1876!). His thesis focused on refraction (“On Measuring #Refractive Indices”).

During WWII, Dr. Drew’s work on proper storage of blood led to development of a national blood bank in US (initially African Americans couldn’t give blood, then could only give plasma, and only to African American patients).

Dr. Chapelle’s test was that if #ATP is present, with #luciferin and #luciferase…..voila! #bioluminescence! His ATP fluorescent assay can detect the presence of life.

Alice Ball turned chaulmoogra oil into its ethyl ester form which made it more easily applied. Her method became known as the Ball method. She died before her method became an injectable treatment for this disease.
