Private Albert Bayliss, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, was killed early in WW1. For a decade he lay buried as an unknown soldier in Broodseinde Military Cemetery. His remains were exhumed in 1924, and he was identified by a number on his boots.

It's Trafalgar Day today which gives me an excuse to segué to one of the most bizarre naval battles of the Great War.

On 14th September 1914 the British cruise liner RMS (HMS) Carmania destroyed the German cruise liner SS (SMS) Cap Trafalgar in the South Atlantic.

Another useful glossary of French First World War specialist terms with their English equivalents. This time it’s #Railway terminology, but lots of the terms also crop up in a military context.

A lire !

I got very curious about this. You can trace Shearer's unit (21 CCS) and you can see what looks like the echo of his little blaze of fame: in Sept 1916 you get visits from various grandees including ... the editor of the BMJ, who presumably came to see for himself.

Buried in the same cemetery as Captain Jefferies VC, and killed on this same day, is Sergeant Lewis McGee VC. Awarded his Victoria Cross for his bravery during the attack on the Broodseinde Ridge on 4th October, he would be killed just eight days later.
