The Vatican opened an investigation into Cádiz bishop Rafael Zornoza over alleged sexual abuse of a minor in the 1990s in Getafe; Zornoza denied the claims and suspended his activities.

La Conferencia Episcopal Española (CEE) ha expresado su «confianza en la justicia» y ha mostrado su «respeto» ante el trabajo del tribunal de la Rota de la Nunciatura apostólica en España después de que este organismo recibiese una denuncia sobre un posible caso de pederastia del obispo de Cádiz y Ceuta, Rafael Zornoza. Así se han expresado fuentes de la CEE en declaraciones a Europa Press este lunes, horas después de que el Obispado de Cádiz y Ceuta asegurase que estas acusaciones «son muy graves y falsas». El obispo ha decidido suspender temporalmente su agenda para el esclarecimiento de los hechos. Luis Argüello, presidente de la Confederación Episcopal Española, ha reconocido «con dolor» que el hecho de que el Vaticano haya abierto una investigación sobre el obispo de Cádiz «concede una verosimilitud a la acusación». No obstante, ha pedido respetar la presunción de inocencia. la Diócesis de Getafe, en relación a esta denuncia de cuando Zornoza ejercía como sacerdote en la Diócesis madrileña, ha manifestado que se pone a disposición de los tribunales competentes para cualquier colaboración que nos sea requerida. Hechos supuestamente cometidos en GetafeNo obstante, ha señalado que hasta el día de hoy ninguna instancia oficial de la Diócesis ha recibido alguna acusación formal sobre los hechos publicados. Asimismo, ha manifestado «una vez más su firme condena de todo tipo de abuso y su compromiso en la lucha contra estos, poniendo todos los medios posibles que eviten factores de riesgo y aumenten la prevención«. El Vaticano ha abierto una investigación contra el obispo de Cádiz y Ceuta, Rafael Zornoza, de 76 años, por presunta agresión sexual a un menor de manera continuada durante los años 90, cuando el prelado ejercía como sacerdote en Getafe (Madrid) y dirigía el seminario de la diócesis. La víctima envió este verano una denuncia por correo al Dicasterio para la Doctrina de la Fe reclamando medidas y relatando los hechos, que según ha señalado se remontan al año 1994 y ocurrieron cuando contaba con entre 14 a 21 años de edad.

The Diocese of Cádiz and Ceuta issued a statement on Monday morning in response to information published in the newspaper El País referring to a Vatican investigation into allegations against the Gaditan bishop Rafael Zornoza for an alleged case of pedophilia during his years at the Getafe seminary. The text firmly denies the allegations: "The accusations being made, relating to events that took place almost thirty years ago, are very serious and, moreover, false." Regarding the process: "The case was brought last week to the court of the Rota of the Apostolic Nunciature in Spain. There is full confidence in justice and we will cooperate with it in all that is required. At the same time, it is necessary to remember the respect for the presumption of innocence that attends all people." It also states that the bishop is currently undergoing treatment as he suffers from "an aggressive cancer." It adds that Zornoza "has decided to suspend his schedule temporarily to clarify the facts and to receive the treatment he is undergoing." It stresses that "from this Diocese, no further statements will be made until the tribunal's ecclesiastical decision is known." It should be recalled that more than a year has passed since Rafael Zornoza turned 75 and submitted his resignation as bishop of Cádiz and Ceuta so that a successor named by the Vatican could take over. According to the Code of Canon Law: "For the diocesan bishop who has reached seventy-five years of age, he is urged to present his resignation from his office to the Supreme Pontiff, who will provide taking into account all circumstances." Biography: Rafael Zornoza was named bishop of the Cádiz diocese by the Vatican on August 31, 2011. He took possession on October 22 of that year, starting a new era as he succeeded Antonio Ceballos who led the Gaditan Church for eighteen years. Born in Madrid on July 31, 1949, he studied at the Calasancio College with the Piarists, while also pursuing music and piano studies at the Madrid Conservatory. He entered Madrid's Minor Seminary to finish high school there. At the Madrid Conciliar Seminary he studied Theological Studies from 1969 to 1974, finishing them with a Bachelor’s in Theology. He was ordained a priest on March 19, 1975 in Madrid and assigned as vicar of the parish of San Jorge, and parish priest in 1983. After leaving the Madrid diocese in October 1991, he served as private secretary to the first bishop of Getafe.
