The company said it is developing a system to automatically detect when it is interacting with a teenager or minor, and will automatically apply restrictions and block content not suitable for the user's age. OpenAI says it intends to uphold its principle of “treating adult users as adults,” so as age controls are more fully in place, ChatGPT will behave less restrictively and provide access to erotic content for verified adults. CEO Sam Altman posted on X that the aim is to launch a new version of ChatGPT with a personality closer to what users liked in the previous GPT-4o model. In addition to age controls, the company has been introducing safeguards to prevent harmful behavior by users with mental health issues, such as reducing the assistant’s flattery in GPT-4o or applying safeguards in mental health crisis situations. “We know this made it less useful and pleasant for many users without mental health issues, but given the seriousness of the problem, we wanted to fix it,” Altman said. The company says it has mitigated the “grave mental health problems” and that it has new protective tools to safely relax restrictions in most cases. As a result, in a few weeks OpenAI will roll out a new version of ChatGPT that can respond “in a very human way,” use many emojis, or behave like a friend if users want, and will even allow erotic conversations for verified adults.
