people get stuck in this game bc their mentality is poor and they misuse the resources available to them

trickle down analogy is also not great bc everyone is just playing for fun here

people wanna play games that are fun, and that usually involves teammates and opponents either being of similar skill OR being friends

like this is just how social dynamics work

ok see so theres several differences here but the most direct conflict here is that plenty of people spawn in already rich or in an environment that easily enables success

nobody was born magically good at splatoon

the overlap between ppl who make it to the top and ppl who complain about voting, tiering, and "the system" is *very* small

if you measure the skill of the scene by the average, you can try to "fix" the systems

but if you measure by the volume of top level players, it doesn't really matter

most people simply do not have the set of mental tools to fly high and ive never figured out how to impart it upon anyone
despite several serious attempts

id set a challenge to have someone let me take them under my wing and show them how but

ive been burned tryna do that like 10 times so idk im starting to think it's just not possible cuz im too firey and abrasive

if your only goal is to get better and you can set aside your ego or desire to win fast, you really do not need anything else

pretty sure i could start over from complete fresh account and find my path to improvement reasonably quickly

but you have to be very clear-headed about what you truly want

and on the asking for practice side, demonstrate that the existing resources alone aren't good enough for you to make progress

are you playing uncapped tournaments? what's preventing you from getting scrims with the people who slightly best you?

give people a reason to and the ability to help you

im hardly top level but

im far more willing to humor someone if they can demonstrate that theyve actually put in some meaningful amount of work themselves

ask questions that are specific enough to show you tried to think through some things yourself, don't just generically throw around buzzwords

but tl;dr yeah it's a tiered system except to get into the next tier you basically have to have someone from the tier above you say "hey we should let this guy in" and then the entire tier above you votes on whether they think you should be let in or not

people for a pickup in tournament or like, a sub for a scrim, but that's the bulk of it, the rest is just status

i think the rankings get a bit hazier the lower you go but for +1 especially i think is very *not* a popularity contest and you can generally tell when someone's at the level

he didnt like the system either which is why he transitioned away from it, it's mostly there as a legacy system now and frankly i don't think it gets used toooooo much anymore

but it's not like you need it to improve

it provides easier access if you just want to find a couple of similarly-skilled

i'm pretty sure this happens in any competitive environment (people only want to play with/against people they think are worth their time, but are more lenient about it with their friends) it's just sendou bothered to kinda systematize it

if anything it's mildly better because it's public
