Part of why I got interested in speedrunning and challenge runs in the first place, is that they were approachable. "Anyone can speedrun" and "Anyone can beat Battletoads", but if you keep adding restrictions it kinda feels like they're soul purpose is to invalidate other's achievements

Even in speedrunning, there's been a big rise in arbitrary ruleset categories at GDQ, even if they're a lot less popular to actually run, or just do something BlindFolded

There's this need to selling viewers on showing them something they've never seen before.

Maybe it's why you get some people who say Battletoads isn't all that hard, because they've watched TMR beat it half a million times

To them, these are "solved problems", even if they aren't the one who has solved it

Challenges need to keep one-upping each other to the point of ridiculousness
November 24, 2025 at 7:24 PM
It feels that people would rather watch something they hadn't seen before, either via some arbitrary ruleset, or something that is randomized to the point of silly difficulty. Maybe this helps explain why Roguelites, Randomizers, and stuff like Ironmon are popular

Challenges no longer feel like a personal achievement, instead it feels like it's a youtube clickbait

It's no longer:
Any%, Deathless / 1CC, Low Level Challenge

It's Instead:
Beats Elden Ring with a <weird controller> or Beat Aria of Sorrow with <long list of restrictions> and Blindfold runs

My take is I feel a lot of people don't care anymore. I've observed this kind of ... "one-uppance" of challenges. It's why we have all these dumb challenge youtube vids, RetroAchivement sets of extremely arbitrary conditions, and GDQ runs include less Any% runs

They claim it's End to End encryption. Which it probably was before. Maybe they use the PINs to encrypt so effectively making it so the sender/receive can only see (similar to signal i guess). But it isnt like DMs werent encrypted before.

Probably mostly a marketing thing and part of the "rebrand"
