Cyber security engineer & janitor.
Which executive decided Subway should use touch screens?! Horrific lag, terrible UI, and no human interaction.

May you forever find LEGO under your bare feet.

For the first time in 9 years of working in cyber security I think I might be experiencing burnout.
I can’t tell if it’s the workload and insane hours, or the state of the world, but it’s probably both.

The horrors continue.

Every hacking scene in any movie: “They’ve backdoored the buffer overflow with a 2 million bit 2048 RSA key - I’ll need to mutex their IP address with JavaScript”

A friend just built a new computer, and he basically threw it together whatever parts we close enough.

I painstaking review every component for weeks with decision paralysis.

I have second hand stress watching him do this.

I hope the R1 team are having a chuckle at the chaos they’ve caused in the markets.
I wonder if Altman is sweating yet.

I love nothing more than having people force through Slack notifications to me while I’m on leave.

Im grateful for the opportunity to create shareholder value when I’m meant to be spending time with my family. 🌴

Jean-Marie Le Pen, the French far right leader, died today.

If you wonder how many French people feel about that, these are the scenes of celebration on the streets of Paris this evening.

One sign reads “The dirty racist is dead”.

It drives me nuts that influencers sell people on VPN providers, and say shit like “your ISP can read your emails”.

Firstly most people are using some form on webmail over TLS, for seconds, you’re just moving the threat from your ISP to a company who you know even less about.

A security vendor just sent us a list of cloud permissions they need for their tool.
When we pushed back on excessive perms they told us they were requesting them for “possible future features”. 🤡

In other news Principal of Least Privilege first discussed the early 70’s.

Going forward I will be writing incident response reports in Comic Sans.

I want my fonts to mirror the clown I’m writing about.

Turns out the failing fan in my NUC wasn't *just* a noise issue - it's a little less hot as well.

Suppose this means I should overclock it until it's screaming.

I just replaced the failing fan inside an Intel NUC. The new fan is almost entirely silent, and I forgot what silence felt like it seems.

Also the amount of dust is vulgar.

I’ve finally ordered a fan replacement for my 10th gen NUC. It’s been running solidly for 3-4 years at this point, and has probably saved me 4-5 times its initial cost had I just used the cloud.

Just deployed an update to a (soon-to-be open source) CTI project and it cut the CPU usage by 15%.

That feeling… 📉😌

People seem to think because the company slack exists I’ve got an obligation to reply ASAP.
No, Dave, you’ll be waiting a full business day, it’s Sunday.

Almost every time I build something that I intend to open source, I end up stopping as “it’s not good enough” or “the code sucks” - tell me I’m not the only one.

I left Twitter about 2 years ago and Mastadon never quite hit the mark - it’s really quite nice seeing all of the InfoSec people I used to follow in my feed again.

IR automation is great but it doesn’t beat watching chaos unfold when it fails and no one knows what to do anymore.
