I’ve got a paper in press on automobile culture and far-right populism, which makes a very similar argument. There’s definitely a lot more work needed on this. My core claim is that far-right populism is embedded in local sociocultural identities — including food, hobbies, and aesthetic tastes.

Yes but no? Söder explicitly said that döner is his favourite food and even made döner-merch. His food blogging isn’t really about “Bavarian authenticity”, it’s part of his ordinary-guy appeal, just like you said. He also posts constantly about Star Wars, which is hardly a Bavarian identity marker…

Considering my previous work on booze and support for the Sweden Democrats, I suppose there’s still some academic value in this fieldwork. Honestly though, I love EPSS, really sad not to be going this year.
