Real as hell, I was literally thinking of this one from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night when I wrote that:

A retro achievement for Castlevania Symphony of the Night titled "Rondo of Blood Gaiden" that reads "Finish the game as Richter in one sessions defeating all the bosses and without using save points to refill your health." It's currently sitting at a 1.12% completion rate.

Gex: Enter the Gecko (Gex 2) had a generally offputting artstyle since everything was an off-brand, uncanny valley pastiche of pop culture, but those horror channel levels legit fucked 6yo me up. Cute mascot platformer my ass

A candle lit gothic castle hallway with impossibly high ceilings and a frightening alien robot thing portrait in the center.

A pitch dark, multi-tiered room with sparse candles throughout, marked by a blood-splattered sign that reads "step into the light".
