Dragon QUEST V did have monster collecting mechanics in 1992 that was a direct inspiration, but the monster collecting jrpg subgenre generally got its start in '87 with Digital Devil Story Megami Tensei

Now the real issue with people calling other monster catching games "Pokemon killers" is that it implies Pokemon and Pokemon alone has a right to the genre when not only was it not the progenitor, many supposed "killers" are doing their own unique thing and shouldn't be compared like that.

Pokemon in Gen 1 were genuinely unique creatures in a world with normal ass elephants and whatnot, while the Johto games expand the idea within that framework. The transition into them fully replacing animals as mundane didn't come into full force until Gen 3 really.

I think its funny to bring this up considering the original ideas brought up in Pocket Monsters Zukan do clearly paint Pokemon as a unique phenomenon in an abstracted but still similar version of 20th century Japan.
