If your HD TV died and you have to replace it, why *not* get the better one? That kind of mindset.

But it didn't work for anything else because either it wasn't very useful or it's *so* expensive and *so* clunky that it's actively repellant (like VR).
November 28, 2025 at 8:52 PM
Yeah, that's completely fair. But that's what I meant. HD TVs were a killer app because they're a really obvious and *massive* improvement over CRT TVs for most uses. 4k TVs did okay because there is a visible benefit there (and because plasma TVs started dying around when 4ks became available).
November 28, 2025 at 8:52 PM
(Yeah, you can stream some stuff in 8k but like...don't. Seriously. Streaming kills a lot of the quality and you really might as well just get a 4k TV and blu-ray player and watch stuff in 4k. It'll literally be better quality than 8k streaming)
November 28, 2025 at 8:45 PM
You can get an 8k TV, but almost nothing is actually made in 8k and the difference between 4k and 8k on a standard home TV is basically impossible to make out. In the movie theatre, it's a thing, sort of, but at home? Not really.

4k, you can at least watch a lot of stuff in that format.

that most people would just assume they got shitty glasses.

Every time 3D comes around, there's like one movie that put effort into the effect and then ten million that barely even try. IIRC, in the 50s 3D craze, there were movies that weren't even actual 3D, they just put a colored filter on them and called it a day and it'd look weird enough
November 28, 2025 at 8:19 PM
Most people haven't bought any of these attempted crazes (4k TVs only sort of succeeded because they happened to come out when some older HD TVs started crapping out), they were all framed as necessary and if none of them were necessary, why is this annoying super-Clippy necessary?
November 28, 2025 at 8:02 PM
IMO, it's not just NFTs. It also comes after a string of other things like 8k TVs, 3D TVs, virtual reality, bitcoin (which most people still don't understand) and a parade of the dumbest people you've ever seen spewing complete gibberish on TV.

There hasn't been a killer tech app in like 20 years.

They also rely very heavily on "vibes". The smug right-wing person who sounds calm but is hard to follow gets people thinking they're being reasonable while the person getting directly insulted and upset is unreasonable because they're showing overt emotion.

It really does feel like the Bajorans didn't know what to do with him and just left him there because they never really cared about DS9 that much until it became a convenient way to create a layer of separation with the Federation.
November 28, 2025 at 7:22 PM
So the result is just...he gets called out and told off when he oversteps, but no one ever does anything substantial because Starfleet can't get rid of him and the Bajoran government doesn't care enough to exert any pressure on him.
November 28, 2025 at 3:25 PM
and was willing to take orders from whoever was in charge of the station, there was never a meaningful reckoning about how messed up his actual mindset and beliefs were. Especially since most of his extreme bullshit was aimed at Quark who actually *was* usually up to something.
November 28, 2025 at 3:25 PM
He worked for the Cardassians and the Bajorans but he functionally had the exact same job and I think there was an element that the Bajorans kept him around because he was intensely impersonal about his job and they didn't know what to do with him otherwise. And since he just...stayed there,
November 28, 2025 at 3:25 PM
It kinda feels like the only reason Odo wasn't a bigger problem was because he had basically no broader ambition at all. He'd rather stay in the same position for decades, trying to bust Quark for petty crimes, than actually take responsibility for anything that mattered on the big picture.
November 28, 2025 at 3:25 PM
I could easily see a take where the problem is that a really malignant mindset got introduced so long ago that they can't tell it's *not* inherent to them anymore. But that doesn't make them (and Odo) *not* fascist.
November 28, 2025 at 3:19 PM
This is a species where they spend most of their time literally mixing with each other, including all of their thoughts and beliefs, who had a really nasty traumatic event in their past...that literally every single Changeling gets exposed to the instant they come into being.
November 28, 2025 at 3:19 PM
Helped by how Odo didn't seem to have any actual ambition. He's a fascist who had the highest ambition of...keeping the exact job that he already had.

IMO, I think if I ever did a Trek thing that involves the Changelings, I'd probably throw in that this desire isn't innate to them.
November 28, 2025 at 3:19 PM
A lot of the time, it kinda feels like he only really kept the job because Bajor didn't want security to be totally Starfleet and Starfleet just kinda settled and went with the guy who had been running security before they took the station over to reduce friction.
November 28, 2025 at 3:19 PM
but the German immigrants didn't do that. And yeah, there really was a lot of "they keep their streets too clean and it makes us look bad" going on and there was a huge amount of resistance to just...cleaning up more.
November 28, 2025 at 3:14 PM
You go back to the like, 1830s, and you'll find a lot of stuff about how the Germans are bad and should go back to Germany because they kept their streets too clean and were fine with letting people see their families. It was like...a thing that "real American men" would actively hide their families
November 28, 2025 at 3:14 PM
So it kind of short-circuits the brain and they go “this looks fine” *because* they think they were involved in making it, while they have to go to extreme lengths to feel involved in something someone else is making for them.
November 28, 2025 at 1:24 PM
I think this is getting at a kind of error in human cognition. A lot of people don’t like not being involved in a project they’re connected to, so they get really nitpicky because they don’t understand what’s happening. With AI, putting the prompt in satisfies that need.
November 28, 2025 at 1:24 PM
Morris sounds like she just straight up talks to the same people in her department every day and doesn't really actually do anything.
November 28, 2025 at 2:01 AM
Meetings aren't *nothing*...but Walmart's got an infamously shitty HR department and if she's the head of HR, it means she's actively involved in Walmart's "underpay the employees so bad they need SNAP to live" scheme, and the way she describes her own day lacks anything...actually actionable.
