when I was leaving Christianity, spiritual bypassing was a subtle danger that i tried to be very aware of. strange that i encounter it again now while trying to recover from long covid—or maybe not strange at all: feeling broken and using religion or wellness to stop the pain aren't that different
Calming yourself or controlling your emotions isn't real healing if you never actually allow the underlying emotions to surface. Many people use regulation skills: breathing, grounding, distraction, staying composed, as a way to avoid discomfort rather than move through it. While those tools can stabilize the nervous system, they can also become a shield that blocks genuine emotional expression. Without release, regulation becomes a subtle form of repression: the emotions stay trapped and unprocessed, even if you look "in control" on the outside. True emotional health requires both steadiness and willingness to feel the deeper layers by letting the emotional arc complete instead of containing it indefinitely. It's a reminder that regulation should open the door for release, not replace it.

She spent 5 years in Congress attacking the left—and never feared for her life or safety to any level that would make her resign. She spent 5 weeks mildly critiquing the MAGA right and the backlash was so severe she is resigning. 5 years of antagonizing the left resulted in no action. 5 weeks of criticizing the right resulted in resignation. That says it all.
