...which is a good reason for the media not to cover him as much as they do - although it makes for easy stories, I suppose.

Are you saying Ted O'Brien was wrong in what he said?
November 28, 2025 at 1:24 AM
1. The value of land is determined by its best use. If farming is less lucrative than another activity, it's not high value ag land.
2. States do this very well.
3. Hopefully with caveats against NIMBYism....if we're for climate action, speed is of the essence.

Ted O'Brien in his RN interview this week basically said that inflation would have been lower under a Liberal government because wages wouldn't have risen (which also, he said, would have lessened the impact of bracket creep...)
Which gives an indication of their thinking.

Thanks for proving the point.

My grandfather did all the laundry for her, but kept it a deep secret because of course men didn't do that in those days...
November 27, 2025 at 6:37 AM
My grandfather was a Methodist Minister, which meant a different parish every 3 years.
Part of my grandmother's 'job' was to serve up morning and afternoon teas to parishioners - every day.
So she constantly collected recipes, written in spidery handwriting, with names like "Mrs Price's Kisses".

Well, your original scenario involved moving states, so it was absurd.
And no, not paying a fine would not see your Centrelink payments cancelled.
November 26, 2025 at 9:42 AM
I'm sure you did.
As for the 'utopia' bit, I think I made it clear that laws can and are misused.
And lots of them don't have upsides (I mean, how is getting life for murder an upside, for example?)
November 26, 2025 at 9:04 AM
Is that what your post was about?
It wasn't obvious.
November 26, 2025 at 9:02 AM
Nearly every law in existence can be misused/misapplied.
It's not a reason not to have them.
As for 'warrants for not voting', good on you for making up a totally ridiculous scenario.
November 26, 2025 at 8:30 AM
Neither of which are particularly progressive.

Anyway, despite their name, the Greens get all huffy when you suggest they should be putting the environment first.
"We've got FIVE pillars,' they'll tell you. "The environment's only one of them."
They should change their name.
November 26, 2025 at 7:48 AM
Sorry, who says they're 'supposed to be progressive'? If anything, as the name suggests, they're meant to be the party of the working class and unions.
November 26, 2025 at 7:10 AM
If you took one every time a Greens politician said something was Labor's fault, it'd be even quicker.
November 26, 2025 at 7:08 AM
...so they're being kept 'safe' (a requirement if they're refugees) but can't be let into the community because of the risk they cause.
November 25, 2025 at 7:42 PM
OK, but this is second hand information - sorry, I'm a bit mistrustful of media reports.
I can see that they might be classified as refugees because they'll be in harm's way if they return home, but that would be because they're accused of serious crimes - which is why they were detained in Aus.
November 25, 2025 at 7:40 PM
No, it doesn't.
As UBIs don't actually exist anywhere at all at present, it's not possible to say what a UBI would be in practice.
It's a concept.
And I'm not advocating of a universal payment - I'm saying it's not necessary in the Australian context, where we have a safety net.
November 25, 2025 at 7:36 PM
Which is basically what we have with Centrelink.
Everyone is guaranteed a base rate.
To 'UBI' it, make the requirement to be seeking work (and thus the mutual obligations) less onerous.
November 25, 2025 at 8:12 AM
And what happens is that a recommendation is made.
A case will need to be made and it may not be acted upon.
Meanwhile, until this is resolved, the person continues to receive their payment.
November 25, 2025 at 8:10 AM
And yet a couple of men I know of who were accused of rape lost their jobs immediately. One, found to be innocent, still can't work in the industry.
In this case, all that's being required is that the person rocks up to the court case.
You know, due process.

So we don't want more gas being extracted, we don't want gas to be used as a transition fuel, but we want to use more of it in Australia?
November 25, 2025 at 6:11 AM
...internally, often one person sets the agenda (might be the CEO, might be the mayor). Few checks on a forceful personality.
November 25, 2025 at 6:10 AM
As a former local councillor, it's also too subject to personal influence, both internally and externally.
I got a heap of money in grants for my local council by lobbying the MPs I knew, but that's not a good basis for the distribution of funding.*
*No personal gain involved!!
