Animita When I stood with you on El Tatio, I thought of my heart like a geothermal field. Some mornings, I wake up cold-cold like the desolate Atacama. When we drove down Ruta CH-23 towards San Pedro, I saw humble animitas; memorials—built for someone who died, small houses to light a candle for the ánima, or soul, which wanders earth after death. The desert itself feels like an animita, house of red dust & dry rock; & yet, high in the Andes, a salt lake the most pale colors of blue & green. Wind, like soplo de viento, pushed through us across Piedras Rojas. I told you of my last-dying grandparent, & how glad I was she died. I never forgave her for whipping my brother's legs across his hamstrings-with a switch. When I was the oldest— powerless; sunk deep into myself like Lake Chaxa salt crusts. Tatio in the Kunza language could mean burnt or oven. No one really knows. Kunza words are dead now, like my grandmother, & my heart still boils years later, as I wonder what I could've done to save my brother. When I held you on El Tatio, I asked if loving me felt cold like the Atacama. You answered by showing me what grows: altiplano & salt bush-the yareta.
