🚨 The new AI moratorium language risks torpedoing state lawsuits against Meta, TikTok, Snap, as well as families trying cases because their children died due to social media.

The moratorium is the BIGGEST gift to Big Tech. It must be stopped.

Once again, Mark Zuckerberg's proxy, Netchoice, misrepresents the popular Age-Appropriate Design Codes that have become law in four states and have been introduced in a dozen more.

A good reminder of what side Big Tech is on, and it's not the side of young people.

Thanks @jonfavs.bsky.social and @max-fisher.bsky.social for highlighting our research that @accountabletech.bsky.social and @designitforus.bsky.social did on Instagram Teen Accounts!

A huge thanks to @mepriestley.bsky.social and Rep. Kathleen James for leading the way alongside the incredible young advocates in VT.

As our Campaigns Director Alison Rice notes, this research is proof we need independent regulation to give young people the safety they deserve on Instagram. It's apparent to us that Instagram's safety tools did not work as intended.

Meta has also spent time boosting these numbers to lawmakers and parents, seemingly acting as though survey data of parents presented with the "idea" of Teen Accounts is proof of efficacy. Every reporter, lawmaker should reject the notion. /7

Meta contested our findings, of course. Liza Crenshaw described our report as "manufactured," and the content seen is no different than "humor from a PG-13 film." The truth of the matter is that our test Teen Accounts did not work the way Meta promised. End of story. /6

The content our participants saw ranged from sexual content to content that promoted disordered eating, some of which was too gross for the Post to publish. We detail four examples here and blurred the faces/names to protect the privacy of the creator.

A huge honor to be featured in my city’s paper @chicagotribune.com (in print!). Our work taking on Big Tech includes the fight to protect my community, here in Illinois and I’m glad the work of Design It For Us here in IL is getting the recognition it deserves

Why would Amazon try and eliminate the agency in charge of consumer product safety? 🤔🤐

Ahhh, the irony.

The moment a lawyer representing Meta, Google, and Amazon got schooled by a federal judge for sounding like the tobacco industry in attempting to say social media isn't addictive to minors:

“You sound like the tobacco companies... It might be actually worse than a carcinogen."

This was a pretty shocking moment from Sarah Wynn-Williams, the latest Meta whistleblower to come forward, to Sen. Hawley.

"Meta’s now a trillion dollar company… we’ve got the most valuable segment of the population [13-17 y/o] and we have them. We should be trumpeting it from the rooftops.”
April 10, 2025 at 2:54 AM
Pretty stunning testimony here from Sarah Wynn-Williams, the latest Meta whistleblower to come forward, to Sen. Blackburn:

"Facebook was targeting 13-17-year-olds. It could identify when they were feeling worthless, or helpless... and share it with advertisers."

@designitforus.bsky.social is proud to support this youth-led amicus in the Garcia v. CharacterAI case. This case must be allowed to move forward

Today, a California Judge recklessly blocked a common-sense kids online privacy and safety law in full. The Age-Appropriate Design Code would protect young Californians from Big Tech’s predatory practices. Instead, the Judge sided with tech’s profits, not young people’s wellbeing

Huge! The Vermont Kids Code is one step closer to becoming law after it crossed over to the House today. Vermont is leading the way in protecting young people online by passing the Kids Code!
March 13, 2025 at 8:14 PM
We're proud to see Vermont State Senators propose the Age-Appropriate Design Code again this year, and we are eager for the Vermont Senate to advance it to the House.

This week, we sent a letter to Vermont State Senators calling for them to pass the AADC. @designitforus.bsky.social

Solomon explains exactly why the Kids Codes are common-sense: this is about mitigating the bad and maximizing the good on social media.

UK/EU has these protections, and the Internet as not ceased to exist! (As Netchoice claims it would)
March 7, 2025 at 7:18 PM
Netchoice, a tech industry proxy group, has sued to block AADCs in California and Maryland even though the laws do not violate the 1st amendment, and MD tweaked their law. Netchoice has attacked the law because Big Tech simply "do[es] not want regulation."
March 7, 2025 at 7:18 PM
AADC/Kids Codes are common-sense measures meant to offer companies a path to creating online experiences that are safer for young people. As Del. Solomon explains, this is about giving companies "room to innovate" without "overly burden[ing]" them.
March 7, 2025 at 7:18 PM
Amid congressional inaction to protect young people online, states are stepping up and leading the way by passing Age-Appropriate Design Code laws that require Big Tech to design their products for us.

Here's Maryland Delegate Jared Solomon crushing tech talking points🧵
