I think that could be part of it. Part of it is also, as was pointed out to me by someone, that Ning Fei is based on Sun Wukong from Journey to the West who also has a torture headband.

It doesn't make the storyline any better - Ning Fei is still being abused by his Ghost!

There's also 'woman who was the sacrificial focus of an Ahamkara cult *before* she was a Lightbearer and is now haunted by the Ahamkara wish she made in her first life'.

And also Lord Radegast has an Ahamkara and traps their enemies in a reality bubble so their tortured wishes can feed the ahamkara

Tan's storyline can be summed up as

Tan: I need to get this geezer out of my head D:
Yannick: *betrays him, tries to wipe him, dies stopping Tan getting blown up*
Tan: ...I'm glad he's gone! I absolutely need to go and get him back right this second.

Yeeeeah it was... a choice. And some of the stuff in Rising gets *dark*. There's Tan-2 who is a young Lightbearer (like, late teens) who is sharing his exo mind with a guy who used to be a brutal Warlord and who can take control of his body to do crime.

they know they're gonna be fine no matter what there are no consequences for them so they only need to care about the short term

Also I don't think they see anyone except themselves as actual thinking feeling real people

It's been bugging me ever since I played his story! And I like his questline, do not get me wrong! But the disconnect definitely hit me with a dose of 'I am not sure the writers realised this was fucked up'.

New Lights don't do an accidental tour of Nessus trying to find the entrance to Insight Terminus!

(When i started playing, it took ages before I found out how to get into the Fallen Saber bunker because people would zoom ahead, and the marker did not indicate the actual entrance.)
