Interestingly I'd say the most fantastical conceit, the idea of the Iorph (elves basically) living so long that any humans they befriend die long before them, is by far the most successful one. Our main character Maquia finds and raises a human baby, who she names Ariel, while fleeing from the destruction of her home, and the bulk of the film is dedicated to exploring their complicated mother/son relationship over the course of that Ariel's life. All the while, there are a lot of political bits and small subplots woven into the story. It's well-crafted, but the central questions the film poses about motherhood are unfortunately just not ones that resonate very deeply with my life experience, and I find its conclusions a bit maudlin and simplistic. I think the film intends to illustrate that a lot of the maxims that Maquia clings to as she attempts to be a good mother---"motherhood is about guts", "moms don't cry", blah blah blah---are flimsy, but I wouldn't say it does so very effectively. At the end of the film, in the midst of a war, she and Ariel are reunited on opposite sides of the battlefield, and it's meant to be this big, dramatic moment, but she just leaves at the end. And in a way, this ties back to that first conceit---easily the movie's most successful idea is that leaving someone behind, whether temporarily or, through death, permanently, doesn't have to be a sad thing. But the other stuff it tries to say on its way there just doesn't really hit very hard for me. Maybe if you're a mother or an aspiring mother this movie means the world to you, and I'd never try to take that from anyone, but it didn't do a lot for me in that regard, as someone who's often been depressed about my inability to have biological children. What it did do for me, I'll say, is almost the entire craftsmanship side of the film. It's really pretty, the directing (a relatively rare turn in that role from Mari Okada, who also wrote the thing) is snappy, and in particular the architecture, especially the interiors in the early half of the movie and the Victorian-esque mining town of its middle third, are all spectacular. In general the world feels very alive and lived-in, something that is sorely appreciated in a fantasy film like this that relies on us the audience being able to believe that this is a real place where people really live. I also particularly love the dragons, who are animated in CG for much of the film but are rendered in flat animation as it nears its climax, a really subtle touch that I think is very, very fun. (In general, regarding the dragons, I'd say the film's portrayal of a world where the myths are fading is one of its most compelling aspects, and it ties in nicely to its thoughts about death and finity.) Given that I watched this on Pluto it was the English dub, which I have to say was also pretty solid. Normally the dubs for things that are this serious tend to be a bit hit and miss, but I liked this one. Lipica Shah as The Village Elder in the first part of the film is probably my favorite performance, despite being a small part, but there are strong ones throughout. Overall I'd say this is a good film overall, just with some missteps and perhaps not entirely one for me. Maybe if I rewatch it sometime it will hit me differently, who can say.

Like "campy" is not the right word I guess, especially not given what I know of the Schumacher film, but it's VERY silly.
the depiction of Crime in this movie (and honestly a lot of Batman stuff of a certain era) is hilarious a guy in a trenchcoat walks up to the storefront of a jewelry store, notices it is unattended, and grins manicly as he smashes the window open and just starts grabbing shit. The store's owner, an old man, attempts to confront him and he smacks the old man with a lead pipe he's produced seemingly from nowhere. He then whistles(?) and a hitherto unmentioned buddy in a car pulls up and they drive off a world where crime is not caused by material conditions but because some people are Criminals and Doing Crime is just what they do in the same way that grizzly bears eat salmon or plants grow toward the Sun this not a minute after a couple kids are shown innocently playing around in an opened fire hydrant, which is a hilarious mix of signifiers if you know anything about fire hydrant opening huh, Batgirl just punched that guy directly in the dick 1998 was a funny time to be making a kids' action cartoon they got a guy in here with blue eyes but the way they've chosen to depict that is to make the whites of his eyes blue and the pupils solid black scary stuff Mr. Freeze's like right hand dude in this movie is a rich guy who's in a bunch of debt, and he pays the rich guy with just gold? just like a hunk of gold? a bouncer calls Mr. Freeze "fruitcake"

I don't know if this really Counts but my alter Hyalite read a pair of short stories during our brief stop at the library today and was not super impressed with either of them. Xie wrongly assumed the former was from the cold war so feel free to laugh at her
A brief review of the short story "The Last Word" by a Mr. Graham Greene, who I strongly suspect is what we might call a Catholic Writer and capitalize both words in doing so. It's a suitably creaky and slowly unfolding story given the subject matter. The prose is tactile and the characterization of its protagonist solid. The twist is nicely set up and executed, but I think in terms of theme it rather overplays its hand as a story. The last line is downright comedic in its abruptness. It's a very Cold War sort of story. - The next story in this collection is called "The News in English" and it's a horribly maudlin thing about a British man being captured by the Nazis during World War 2 and being forced to read propaganda over the air. Ah, but he uses a secret code to smuggle information back home to his wife, listening in. It's a bit much. Although notably the story mentions the real English-speaking Nazi propagandist Lord Haw Haw, somehow, that was a real guy I think I about understand Mr. Greene's sensibilities at this point. Still, it was nice to get a little reading in.

That at least is my best guess as to reverse engineering the thought process of Loopy Opal.

I think if you really had to boil it down, you could probably sum up "Love, Chunibyou, & Other Delusions" as a show about the stories we tell about ourselves. How those stories change as we grow older, but how we never really stop telling them, despite how much we might protest otherwise. Of course, its main vehicle for this is the idea of chunibyou itself. A convenient fiction that a lot of anime---especially a lot of anime aimed at the precise audience this one is---fall into is the idea that there is a dichotomy between "escaping from reality" and "confronting your problems." Following on from that, the idea that there is, in the first place, a clean, convenient, and impermeable barrier between the real and the illusory at all. Chunibyou really seems for a good while like it might follow suit: our main girl Rikka textually uses her chunibyou fantasies as a coping mechanism to avoid really dealing with the death of her father. Simply because of the usual stellar-across-the-board production values, this version of Chunibyou could've still been good, but it would've been substantially less special than what we have here. For a while, Yuta, Rikka's love interest and our male lead, tries that. He tries to "snap Rikka out of it," to have her act normal so she doesn't worry her family and friends. To the show's credit, it doesn't portray this as a black and white thing---it's not like Yuta has no reason for doing this---but to its even greater credit, it also shows that trying to "be normal" makes Rikka miserable. In doing so, its finale, wherein Yuta's own chunibyou persona the Dark Flame Master returns to liberate his love from the prison he himself inadvertently placed her in, firmly rejects the idea that Rikka might be in any way broken. Strange, maybe, but not broken. It's a deeply interesting series from the point of view of someone like myself who, you know, practices magic in real life. Even on a very literal level, everything we see here, whether presented as one of Rikka's fantasies or not, is equally fictional. But, it is very important to me that it requires Yuta to connect with Rikka *on her level*, by taking her to the sea and unsealing the Unseen Horizon she's looked for for so long, for things to resolve. I leave what it says about yours truly that this idea connects with me pretty strongly as an exercise to the reader. The important thing is this: the show fucking rules. I intend to watch, mm, the entire rest of the series as soon as possible. I've got a built-in lazy weekend coming up (I'm gonna be rendered inert from the vaccines I gotta get on Friday), so I've got the perfect excuse.
