Inside Out is a movie I watch when I'm sad. I don't need something to cheer me up, I need something to remind me that being sad is good and healthy sometimes and I should feel what I feel. I'm tearing up just writing this goddamn.

Miyazaki gets his own category, can you blame me?
In Highschool, I went to the theater to watch Spirited Away 6 times. Everything I thought I knew about storytelling and the extent of human imagination up to that point was shattered and I just love this movie so SO much.

My feel-good go-to is Amelie
There are quite a few movies out there that want to remind you to appreciate the little things, Amelie is just the one that makes me smile the most. And what a breakout performance for Audrey Tautou

My favorite comedy is easily Hot Fuzz.
Edger Wright is one of the greatest comedy directors of all time. And Hot Fuzz is peak buddy cop comedy with a solid mystery and even some horror elements sprinkled in for good measure.

I do love a good "Sit with this dark feeling for a minute because what did I just watch??" Top favorites in that category are Pan's Labyrinth and OldBoy (2002). I will not expand on this you just gotta watch them.

Side note, "Pan's Labyrinth" is a crappy translation for the title.

Favorite action movie is a tie between Die Hard and Mad Max: Fury Road
Die Hard is a masterclass of setup and payoff, McClain doing the whole movie without shoes is my favorite example of this.
Fury Road is a masterclass in show-don't-tell. So much information given to the viewer in so little time.

First, my favorite movie: City of God.
My love starts on a technical level, the way this movie is shot and edited is still unparalleled. But beyond that, the centering of Brazilian favela voices is spectacular, and the work done with real kids to make them actors is fantastic.
