On another note, it’s genuinely an extremely successful trilogy that doesn’t have a book 2 slump. I think about that a lot “how do you make a successful trilogy?” And both red rising and the schoolomance trilogy do it by expanding the scale in each book (1 planet, multiple planets, solar system)

Also, what I really like about the trilogy is Darrow starts off SO black and white, and the trilogy is about him maturing and learning the shades of grey. Like where to compromise while still staying true to his morals. He also fucks up badly but actively learns from his mistakes

I like Sevro from book 1, but honestly all of my favorite characters show up in book 2. Book 2 is also when he starts trying to overthrow the government, so the politics, which is what I think is Pierce Brown’s strongest talent, really kicks off. There are personalities/betrayals/deaths that gut me

Yeah book 2 and 3 are so good. Then he’s got a new series that takes place maybe 15 years after the end of book 3 and it’s also good, you can see his improvement as a writer and also that someone has given him good feedback that he’s actually listened to

Oh yeah, Red Rising is VERY snappy! The beginning is very basic and almost boring—but then A paradigm shift happens in maybe chapter 7…? Then it’s lightning fast!! Good trilogy. I think the female rep in book 1 is… not ideal. But it’s fantastic in book 2 & 3

It’s such a clean bow tie without any stray pieces that when the author went back to make a book 2 and 3, he had to like… shoehorn new conflicts and write from new POVs of characters that are frankly pretty annoying. I think his newer series are better, but I haven’t read them

Well, Blood Song is actually just a really really good stand alone. The premise is our MC is in prison about to go on “trial” in a battle to the death. And in the days before he recounts his life’s story to a scribe. So the book is a flashback with the final chapter being the “trial” in present day

Blood Song by Anthony Ryan (not the rest of the books in the trilogy tho)

And Johannes Cabal The Necromancer. Perfect snarky dry, mean, way-too-smart, MC.

Can’t tell if you’re referring to DCC or the tainted cup 😅
December 4, 2025 at 10:38 PM
Oh also the Marla Mason series. It’s a completed urban fantasy, it’s def got the fast paced fun of DCC. She does very occasionally have sex but it’s all completely off screen with just occasional one off references like “oh yeah that one time we fucked on the desk”
December 4, 2025 at 10:37 PM
Oh yes I’m rereading DCC right now! It’s very snappy

I recommend The Tainted Cup if you haven’t already read it. It’s like, Leviathan Queer Neurodivergent Sherlock Holmes … ish. In terms of sexy times there is 1 “and they walked away hand in hand 😏” + light poetic allusions to what happened
December 4, 2025 at 10:32 PM
Yeah I also found the book a little slow and honestly I didn’t really get the chemistry between the two MCs. ((Let me know what you like tho, I love giving book recommendations))

I knew it.
