It's a pity lines like Lille Comines or Ascq Orchies were recently abandoned within a 1M+ people metro area. There is indeed potential for at least 2 trains per hour.

What about this bus stop near Milan?
November 29, 2025 at 12:55 PM
It exists in Switzerland as "abonnement transmissible" but it's not well known. In Lausanne the fare is standard pass * 1.5 www.t-l.ch/abos_et_bill...

Why do you assume that ROI would be equal to growth rate? In an economy totally flat vs last year, growth is 0 and profits remain positive at the same level than last year.

Could we extend M18 to Orly-ville and Choisy, add stops to Orlyval (M19?) in Rungis and chemin d'Antony? This way, the Choisy-Massy section of RER C would become useless and we could have more capacity for TGV and freight.
October 3, 2025 at 5:50 PM
To fix that you'd need to run more and more direct trains and rely on connections, so more capacity in IDF and a revolution in SNCF... A better but costlier and complex option would be a tunnel in Paris that would avoid having a double network (Paris-Province + Province-Province)
October 3, 2025 at 5:41 PM
The reason Lille Bdx is so slow is not the 45 min section CDG Massy. 3:50 is possible today with only 3 stops in IDF. The 2 daily TGV make 5h and 6h. Difference is due to time costly stops in SPDC, Poitiers Angoulême, Arras and insane stop times in IDF.

I don't see the point. If you have to spend billion € on a 50km tunnel, why not build a 5km tunnel Nord Montparnasse? Both interconnexion sud and ouest would barely increase speed and would be mostly useful for capacity but going via Nanterre is likely to be much more expensive than via Orly.
October 3, 2025 at 5:41 PM
Indeed. Train is not really competitive on this route in spite of high speed line almost all the way.
October 2, 2025 at 12:52 PM
For ex. you can have Paris-Bordeaux non-stop because Tours, Poitiers, Angoulême can be served by other trains. OTOH Lille-Bordeaux need more stops to consolidate the demand. However the way the LGV Atlantique was built means you lose 15-20 min for each stop so it's faster changing station in Paris.

I remember a good post from @alonlevy.bsky.social saying that French TGV had already reached its maximum with low hanging fruits that are routes to/from Paris but was failing to get other markets as it would need a different logic (more stops, relying on connections, smaller trains...)

From Charleville, 60k, to Lille, 1M people, at 200km on an electrified line , there were only 2 trains/day 30 years ago. There are now 2 trains... per week. Reims-Dijon had 4 to 5 trains per day, that's now 1 train per day to Culmont then bus Culmont-Dijon. That was bad, that's now much worst

A good example is the Paris-Vienna night train that is being cancelled. It serves St. Pölten, 80k, even though it could be served with very good connections in Salzburg. It doesn't stop in Nancy, 330k, although connections in Strasbourg are pretty bad.

France is a large and centralised country while Austria is a smaller and federal country. Most passengers-km in France are done on long distance TGV and on a megacity rail network that have no equivalent in Austria. Most Austrian pass.-km are done on the equivalent of French TER.

You need to compare to the price with 1/2 fare card which is what will pay those who travel often but not enough for a yearly pass. 2.40 CHF.

Donc ce n'est pas de la faute de l'état mais de SNCF voyageurs. A qui appartient la SNCF et qui nomme ses dirigeants ?

Looks like "drawing room" has been used in French at some point as there was no strict equivalent. "Salon" is probably the best translation. www.cnrtl.fr/definition/d...

Definitely not a reality for Paris-Lyon-Marseille... Paris-Marseille doesn't even have 1 train/h and Lyon-Marseille not even 1 train/2h.

The driver is what costs the most in a taxi unlike bus or rail.
September 11, 2025 at 8:19 PM
I think that's the case in all low wage countries. In Yaoundé only public transport are the yellow Toyota Corollas in which you can be up to 6 people (+ the driver!) and pay 0.3 to 1€ depending on distance. Real taxis called "Taxi-dépot" is around 4€. Russian owned Uber-like Yango is also a few €.

Looks like the most common word in France is "sprinkleur" and "gicleur" is the "official" translation. To be honest I hear both words for the first time since this is quite rare here.

C'est curieux. De ce que je comprends il y a libre circulation entre les 2 parties de l'île et visas et permis de séjour sont acceptés de part et d'autre de la frontière.
September 9, 2025 at 2:22 PM
Ça donne environ 2,50€ par habitant ce qui est plutôt raisonnable.

Basel-Mulhouse too. A bit different but I wish Lyon TGV station had been built in St Quentin Fallavier at the junction with Lyon-Grenoble line instead of St Ex airport. With a tram extension from St Ex to SQF.

In 1988, a session of the UN General Assembly was moved from New York to Geneva after the U.S. denied a visa to PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat.

In 2025, we have to reply to the US’ outrageous move the same way: move the GA to Geneva.
