Both books are appropriate for those with academic interest in early Welsh literature, the tales of Y Mabinogi, and the myths and legends of Celtic lands - as well as Welsh-centered polytheistic practitioners, Pagans, druids, and devotees of these Goddesses. /9

In addition to this stand-alone book, a new hardcover collector's edition that bundles "Blodeuwedd" with "Rhiannon: Great Queen of the Celtic Britons" - another deeply researched stand-alone work from me - is about to be released. Learn more here: www.collectiveinkbooks.com/moon-books/a... /8

I explored all of this in my master's thesis, and my research was the basis for writing "Bloduewedd: Welsh Goddess of Seasonal Sovereignty", published by @moonbooksci.bsky.social - check it out if you'd like to learn more. /7

A cultural clash between the rights and powers of women and men underscores the whole of the Fourth Branch; for example, the struggle between Gwydion and Arianrhod that lead to the creation of Blodeuedd is believed to be echos of a cultural shift from matriliny to patriliny. /6

Looking at her tale from a medieval Welsh perspective helps to contextualize some of her actions, especially around her marriage (the legally required consent is not present) and her adultery (sleeping openly with someone for 3 nights is one of nine recognized forms of marriage in medieval Wales)./5

Made from components of the land, testing the worth of her chosen mate, transforming from one form to another as a reflection of her seasonal allegiance, I believe Blodeuwedd is a Seasonal Sovereignty figure, partnered with the Solar Hero of Summer, and the Otherworldly Champion of Winter. /4

Yet, there is more to Blodeuwedd than meets the eye. Ancient threads of tale run through Y Mabinogi, perhaps originating in pre-Christian times. Her love triangle with Lleu & Gronw suggests a seasonal sovereignty myth, for which there are many examples in Celtic tales and Arthurian tradition. /3

Found in the Fourth Branch of Y Mabinogi, c. 12th century but likely based in oral tradition, hers was a cautionary tale to the contemporary medieval audience: women who subvert expectations around their social roles, or express sexual agency can expect to be banished to the fringes of society. /2
