The extremely anomalous & in most cases record-breaking Nov-Dec warmth led to record-low snowpack in many areas. Heavy precipitation bolstered high elevation snowpack in some areas in late Dec despite warmth, but most basins remain far below average snow water equivalent.

Well, it's now official (per NOAA): Dec (and Nov-Dec) 2025 were the warmest such periods on record for Western U.S. (and also for most individual Western states). It has been an extraordinarily sustained period of winter warmth, and this eerily balmy winter continues into Jan.

This is stunning. Listen to this in Philadelphia.

Thousands singing “Hey-Oh, we won’t be silent while our friends are gunned down.”

Really listen to it.

We argue that this new study has broader global implications for wildfire dynamics, & subsequent societal risk, in non-forested biomes (esp. grassland, shrubland, & transitional) as wet-to-dry transitions increase amid rising hydroclimate volatility.

In many settings, the temporal sequencing and magnitude of hydroclimate swings matters just as much, if not more, than the mean state--yet this is something that's currently missing from most contemporary risk and behavior models used in both the academic world and in industry.
New in @globalchangebio.bsky.social: thoughts from me & Jilmarie Stephens on recent study confirming that vegetation accumulation-to-desiccation cycles induced by wet-to-dry climate transitions increase wildfire severity in California's non-forested biomes. onlinelibrary.wiley....

Highest astronomical high tides of year (aka the "King Tides") will occur this weekend in NorCal. But this year, they will coincide w/additional storm surge from nearby low pressure--causing potential for SF Bay Area coastal flooding beyond what we've seen in recent years. #CAwx

A moderately strong winter storm this wknd will bring low pressure and onshore/southerly winds to the SF Bay region. When combined w/ very high astronomical (King) tides, plus aggregate effect of long-term sea level rise, a 2.5+ feet elevation of SF Bay water levels is expected.

As we head into a new year, I wanted to share this conversation I had with @ittefaq.bsky.social on the big picture surrounding climate change: Where we are now; how much warming we're on track to see; & why it's so important to be honest about where we're headed.

#climatechange #adaptation #warming In this episode, I invited Dr. Daniel Swain to talk about the state of the climate as we close out December and look ahead to 2025, examining our current warming trajectory and whether the world is heading toward a 3°C future. The conversation explores the legacy

Well, it has turned into a sleepless night for many in the SF Bay Area due to severe weather. Squall lines containing severe thunderstorms have brought torrential rain (leading to flash flooding) and damaging wind gusts of 60-80 mph. Lots of NWS warnings out. Quite a storm! #CAwx

I'm not sure most folks are aware of the immense magnitude of loss this would entail for the global weather and climate community, and beyond. NCAR has played a greater cumulative role in advancing weather prediction and atmospheric modeling than perhaps any other single entity in the world.

Nearly all weather, climate, & natural hazard research involves NCAR in some way-either directly (as is the case with countless affiliated scientists at universities or elsewhere) or indirectly (through use of NCAR's irreplaceable community datasets, predictive models, or its computing facilities).
