Yeehawgust Day 30: Treasure of the Sierra Madre

I wish I could say the *real* treasure of the Sierra Madre was the friends we made along the way... but it turns out when there's gold in them thar hills the friend supply seems to dwindle pretty quick.

#Yeehawgust Day 29: Pesky Varmints

Varmints get a bad rap; the word means a "troublesome wild animal" and is usually thrown at rats, deer or rabbits that eat crops. But the little guys aren't so bad! Go to Quarry Junction south of New Vegas, for example, and you'll see what "troublesome" really is.

Yeehawgust Day 28: Heat Haze

But it’s a *dry* heat haze…..

Yeehawgust Day 27: Wagon Wheel

Now if you’re working with tough terrain or steep mountain passes, a mule is your best bet. But for just about everything else you can’t beat the classic horse and wagon combo.

Yeehawgust Day 26: Settin' the Woods on Fire

Now this one is a bit more country than western, but it's hard to pass up a spot of Hank Williams. It's not the endorsement of arson that the name might suggest!

Yeehawgust Day 25: Cattledog

There's been a lot of attention paid to just about every kind of noble steed imaginable in Yeehawgust, but not so much to the other loyal companion. It seems only right to remedy that; it is also Doggust after all!

Yeehawgust Day 24: Gila Monster

Clocking in at up to 22 inches long and having the designation as the only venomous lizard in the US, this sluggish reptile has quite the reputation if its name is to be believed.

Yeehawgust Day 23: Headin' Down The Wrong Highway

Ending week 4 on a prompt inspired by a personal favorite of mine, a song about luck that just never seems to turn good.

Yeehawgust Day 22: Legends Never Die

Here’s a bit of a more recent entry for the jukebox musical that is this year’s prompt list, a collaboration between two modern country legends.

#Yeehawgust Day 21: Outlaw State of Mind

The western genre would be nothing without gunslinging gangs, cattle rustling thieves, and antiheroes who aren’t quite square with the law. A protagonist is only as good as the antagonists, so (black) hats off to the baddies who take the reins of the story.

Yeehawgust Day 20: Big Rock Candy Mountain

Which is y'all's favorite fanciful feature of the Big Rock Candy Mountains? I'm partial to the "lemonade springs where the bluebird sings" myself.

Yeehawgust Day 19: Banjo Pickin' Man

Since Yeehawgust has plenty of music-inspired prompts, it's only right to put a spotlight on an instrument that's been, if you'll pardon the phrasing, instrumental to the sound of country music.

Yeehawgust Day 18: Horse to Water

The adage goes "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink." However... I'm here to tell you from personal experience that depending on the horse that first part can also be aspirational.

#Yeehawgust Day 17: In the Valley

This one goes out to all the natural splendors: mountainous vistas, rolling fields of gold as far as the eye can see, dunes that undulate across the desert with the wind, and rock formations which were carved from the earth over countless millennia of weathering.

Yeehawgust Day 16: Where the Deer and the Antelope Play

This line comes from a song I'm sure y'all have heard of.

Mules have a long and storied history with humanity dating back millennia, and they hold a special place in the collective memory of the old West as a strong and reliable pack animal.

Yeehawgust Day 14: Riders in the Sky

Throwing it to the man in black himself again, this time with a prompt based on a song which probably needs no introduction in these parts.

It has a mutualistic relationship with the humble little yucca moth, which serves as its primary pollinator.

#Yeehawgust Day 13: Joshua Tree

Perhaps second only to the various types of cacti, few plants evoke the arid landscape of the west like the Joshua Tree. And like cacti, this strange yucca tree can live for hundreds of years and has developed a prickly protective exterior.

#Yeehawgust Day 12: Sidewinder

Sidewinders (Crotalus cerastes) are a particular sort of rattlesnake with a mode of locomotion made to travel across the sandy biomes of the west. While they can get up to a respectable speed of 18 mph, their method of moving around is a bit goofy at moseying pace.

#Yeehawgust Day 11: The Gambler

Now this is a prompt that has been requested by a few folks, but it's been just shy of making the list a few years in a row. Never seemed like the right moment to play that card. It's like Kenny said... you've got to know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em.

Yeehawgust Day 10: Tumblin' Tumbleweeds

You've got to hand it to the tumbleweed for reaching not just western icon status, but for roaming wherever its heart, or its xylem rather, desires. Or at least wherever the wind blows it. Not many plants live such a nomadic life!
