So true! And in the group conversations Varric also seemed to be standing behind everyone a lot, he was always at the back kind of in the shadows at the edge of the group. For a character so central to the series it felt odd until the reveal confirmed it.

Harding’s responses in particular gave it away for me.

I suspected it was the case because I realised that throughout no one actually ever directly responded to anything Varric said. Also no one ever went to check on him, they came in when Rook was speaking to him but then only addressed them.
It’s subtle, but difficult to ignore when you see it.
