October 2025: Parks Victoria: Gipps Street Elevated Path Community Update “Collins bridge temporary closures: We have nearly finished construction of the Gipps Street Ramp. The final steps include roadworks, footpaths, drainage and signage. For safety reasons, we need to temporarily close Collins Bridge between 9am and 4pm (open other times and dates subject to weather): Tuesday 28 October Wednesday 29 October Monday 17 November Wednesday 19 November There will be no pedestrian or bicycle access across the bridge. See the map below for detour information. Detour signage will be placed at Gipps Street, Yarra Bend Park, Johnston Street and Walmer Street Bridge in advance of the closures. Over 15 years since Albert St protected lanes in East Melbourne were built, the connecting Elizabeth St lanes in Richmond were added 4+ years ago creating a much-loved east-west route for riders

The capacity for all councils to keep working for safer streets rather than a relatively affluent population ignoring how far we've progressed with every generation. This extract from "Struggle Town" by Janet McCalman is horrific, for example, 30 people killed on Richmond's roads in April 1949 (!?)
