This is a tough time for the country. We’re at a very difficult moment in our history. At a time like this, at least the whole country can really around having the “Patriots” in the Super Bowl. Something everyone can feel good about.

I know NATO relations are strained right now but if we ask really, really, really nicely, I think we can probably convince the Germans to let us borrow the city of Nuremberg in a few years

Current events make me a lot more sympathetic to “loss of virtue” as an explanation for past sweeping events. I don’t know how you explain what’s going on without reference to a widespread moral collapse that isn’t obviously reducible to other factors.
