Arcelia flushes red, snatching her phone from the table before he can have the opportunity. “Gods, no.” “Aw, c’mon! If it’s not serious, it shouldn’t matter if I see, right?” He pouts, arms crossed as he leans back — as his mouth curves into a coy smile, tilting his head. “Unless I know him?” Her nose wrinkles. “I doubt it,” she sniffs, shoving her phone into her purse. “He’s not a student here.” “Oh? Which school then?” “He’s not a student, period.” “Oh,” and he gets some sort of mean glint to his eye, leaning in closer, “so he’s older, then.” Arcelia grimaces, rolling her eyes. “Technically.” Adelphel’s smile tints more smirk. “Wow,” he chirps, “look at you! Didn’t realize you had a thing for older guys. Guess that explains the lack of —” and then he has the gall to gesture between them, “you know.” “You must be joking.”

“I already told you,” Arcelia fidgets with the charm on her keychain, her phone clutched in the other hand as she paces, “I can’t this week. I promised a friend I’d take their shift.” She can practically hear the eyeroll through the receiver. “This again? Still.” To his credit, it’s paltry pay. Two weeks of work never covered much beyond late night study snacks and the routine happy hour after setting aside rent. Then again, a student work job was never really about the pay anyway, and it’s not like she could write sugar baby on her resume. The mere notion of listing him as a reference is enough to have her grimace in mild horror. Rather than taking the bait, she offers, “I’m free after Friday.”

Her mouth goes dry at the thought, the casual promise. There’s a furtive knit to her brow as she regards him, obligatory annoyance at the sheer presumption of it all; as she quickly realizes that it’s eclipsed by something else entirely — a nervous flutter in her chest, a shiver of actual anticipation. Still, she can’t help herself. Her ears flick, a twitch of her tail beneath the sheets. “Will we?” His smile doesn’t so much as falter. “Won’t we?” It’s a challenge to match the one she’s already offered, mild or not — a challenge he likely thinks he’s already won, judging from the way he looks at her. A part of her worries that they’re getting a bit too presumptive, the way things are going. Too easy to blur the lines with enough cash tossed upon the problem, to have her reconsider what is and isn’t worth conceding. Admittedly, the stressors that had plagued her in the months before their little arrangement seem so irrelevant now, rent no longer a concern, strategizing groceries a thing of the past. Now, she worries more about which clothes to wear for which outing, taking care to ensure she had a full set of lingerie for each night spent away from home, keeping up with routine nail appointments, coming up with excuses to placate her friends regarding her whereabouts — Studying, of course. Work. Kind of. The sharp point of her canine worries against her bottom lip before she bites down. She tells herself that if they really crossed a line, she’d put her foot down about it. Surely. Paulecrain continues to look at her, some sort of smugness creeping into the patience of his smile. He really would like it if she refuted him. To his credit, she thinks about it. Instead, she sniffs at him. “I guess it depends on if he really can afford it.”
