Ya gotta wonder why 14 pieces unless the myth is working off a different zodiac/star chart. This also relates to the myth of Orpheus which Graves claims was the sacred mushroom and which the maenads ate to achieve ecstasy/ enlightenment (reborn Sun). Mushroom=phalli. Also likely a matriarchal myth.

James Frazer's The Golden Bough talks all about that. Ecstatics and charismatics used to hang around the holy places (temples, etc.) and beg--they were thought of as "gods." Many a young "virgin" was seduced by them "holy men." Not much new under the sun.
