No I don't think it's "pretty weird":
1) They're completely different domains.
2) When I hand over ID in a store, they look, and then they give it back - it doesn't get stored somewhere where it becomes at risk, and nobody makes money from the check itself.

It's incredible that the UK's best-known child protection charity is suggesting that parents need not concern themselves so much with encouraging digital literacy with their children, as it is now a responsibility that can be shared with Big Tech.
