A nice example of a Petric Calcisol, here developed on an alluvial terrace of the Llobregat River at Navarcles. See the cemented rounded shape layer as main diagnostic horizon (petrocalcic).

Carbon in charcoal has a long persistence. The pic shows a slope soil developed after different deposition events, and including charcoal particles horizons from a neighbouring ancient traditional charcoal production site.

Loess soils in Southern Europe (here one in Southern Catalonia) were originated in ancient desertification events (25 to 150 Kyears), a totally understudied topic! Glad to attend and many thanks to the organizers of the #transcatalonia2019!!!
