Ditch? Poor choice. If you are not at the table, you are on the menu.

That’s why we want to be in the driving seat. If we don’t, the tech billionaires will take over more.

There is no way Carney would lift the tanker ban that protects dangerous waters for the sake of a nonexistent pipeline that is completely nonsensical and nobody but Danielle Smith wants. And that is exactly why she wants it — she wants to fight “the Feds”. It’s an Albertan sport.

We already bought 16 F-35 five years ago but still waiting for the delivery. Frankly, from the technical perspective a mix of F-35/Gripen works perfectly, but we don’t need more F-35 than those 16. But we do need some 160 Gripens.

Hang in there! Lots of us in the rest of Canada are rooting for you!

Exactly. That’s why this budget is anti-austerity by increasing the deficit twofold to bet big on Canada.

Canada does care, especially about economic offsets. Saab offered the Gripen assembly and deep maintenance in Canada. Mark Carney already indicated that any military spending by Canada must be beneficial to the Canadian economy. Lockheed Martin must improve their offer to have a chance.

Turkey (Türkiye) has offered putting troops on the ground in Ukraine on several occasions. I don’t know if it is a good idea or not; no other country seems to be enthusiastic about it.

You are probably right about your understanding of the “need”. But does being under US command mean that if the US does not give the order to defend the Ukrainians by active combat, the Europeans cannot engage, even if they wanted to?

They are not “ex Russians” — that’s an insult to their culture. They are ex-Soviet-Unionists and therefore know Russians very well.

The real question is why is Trump so unwilling to exercise any meaningful pressure on Putin? In the case of refusing to ramp up military support for Ukraine one may speculate that it is about preserving materiel for Taiwan, but in the case of oil sanctions this line of reasoning breaks down.
August 12, 2025 at 4:51 PM
Of course these “secondary tariffs” won’t work and that is by design. Their purpose is to string everyone along in believing that Trump is exerting some pressure on Putin, but it must happen without actually hurting Russia.
August 12, 2025 at 4:41 PM
This is the headline that’s being used in the Western media but a more accurate one would be:

PUTIN NOT READY TO MEET ZELENSKY…

…until the completion of some discussions ‘at the expert level’ with some unspecified goals and purpose.

He knows how to play people not reading past the headlines.

Secondary sanctions? I’ll believe it when I see it. (Just to be clear: I’m not talking about announcing them, but actually enforcing them).
August 2, 2025 at 4:46 PM
Well, there is one way in which it does make sense.

Let’s assume that Trump was being soft on Putin because the latter had some compromising material on Trump, say, around his past sexual transgressions. Now, with the Epstein files coming to light anyway, whatever Russia has may have lost its edge.

Part of Canada strong is to have good, reliable international trading partners (like EU), supported by appropriate infrastructure. Time to join the SEPA (you don’t have to use the euro to be part of it) and cut out the US “correspondent” banks and their fees.

And I still can’t buy ON wine at BCLIQUOR. It takes time to get all Premiers on board and moving.

I read reports that Ukraine has struck a Russian oil refinery (Saratovorgsintez), first time in quite a while. Ukrainians have had suspended attacks on energy infrastructure under pressure from the US, not to jeopardize US aid, but now that it’s off the table, they have little to lose by resuming.
July 2, 2025 at 4:25 PM
Yes — just include military support to Ukraine in defence spending.
June 12, 2025 at 5:31 PM
Wow, most of the rest of the developed world looks with worry at their country’s population decline due to the insufficient birth rate, making it impossible to sustain the current standard of living, but for Polievre Canadian population growth is the problem. As if Canada is short on free land.

Strategic bombers that Ukraine targeted are being used to launch cruise missiles, not glide bombs. For those, smaller multi role fighter-bombers are used. So i’d expect glide bombs still being an issue.

Trying to seize a Russian tanker in the waters between Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg? Doesn’t sound like a good idea. Do it when it passes through the Danish straits.
