Basically, those games are like when a group of kids sit there and like "What if its was zombie apocalypse! But with aliens too! And you have infinite world, you can make, grow, build anything, and can make a car from scratch!"
...but those kids know programming - and bam! Cataclysm DDA.

Don't forget - this is only layoffs. How many Devs left themselves? How many were asked, convincingly, to leave? Numbers can be thrice as high, if we take not only layoffs into consideration.
