Photograph by Dave and Les Jacobs / Getty On Thursday, November 6, the New York Times published an op-ed video criticizing the effects of feminism on institutions and warning of the dangers of “toxic femininity.” It briefly ran with the title “Did Women Ruin the Workplace?” I can answer that question: yes. Specifically, me—I’m the woman who ruined the workplace. And, frankly, I had a blast. From the moment that I, a woman, entered the workplace, it was irrevocably changed. And not for the better. On my first day, I arrived with a hopeful heart, excited to serve our clients and become a member of the team. “LOOK SHARP, BUTTHEADS!” I bellowed. “IT’S WOMAN TIME!” Things didn’t improve when I insisted on being called the Cap’n. Much of how I ruined the workplace has to do with the accommodations that I, as a woman, require. Because of me, male employees are no longer allowed to make lewd jokes, hold men-only work gatherings, or type with their penises. Yes, this has ruined the workplace, although it has also drastically reduced typos. I also insisted that our company upgrade to more woman-friendly lighting. Specifically, with the fixtures that I made from feminine-hygiene products. There’s been a lot of buzz about our beautiful new tampondelabra. I try to make ruining the workplace a daily practice. Like this morning, when I practiced “being a daredevil” and crashed my sedan into our reception area. Yes, Beth may never walk without a limp, but she’ll understand. She’s a woman. Plus, this now gives me the opportunity to remodel our entryway into a giant, exquisitely detailed vulva. Boom—workplace ruined.

Over the last three months, colleagues from our editorial, creative, engineering, product, legal, commercial and partnerships teams have set up a Guardian AI working group to consider how we respond to these risks and opportunities and to draft a set of Guardian-wide AI principles. We’ve also been studying other media organisations’ statements and approaches with interest. So today we’re publishing three broad principles setting out how we will and won’t use GenAI tools, as follows: For the benefit of readers GenAI tools are exciting but are currently unreliable. There is no room for unreliability in our journalism, nor our marketing, creative and engineering work. At a simple level, this means that the use of genAI requires human oversight. We will seek to use genAI tools editorially only where it contributes to the creation and distribution of original journalism. We will guard against the dangers of bias embedded within generative tools and their underlying training sets. If we wish to include significant elements generated by AI in a piece of work, we will only do so with clear evidence of a specific benefit, human oversight, and the explicit permission of a senior editor. We will be open with our readers when we do this. For the benefit of our mission, our staff and the wider organisation The Guardian has always been a fast adopter of emerging technologies that support our mission, our journalism and our staff, and we are more than the sum of our parts. When we use genAI, we will focus on situations where it can improve the quality of our work, for example by helping journalists interrogate large data sets, assisting colleagues through corrections or suggestions, creating ideas for marketing campaigns, or reducing the bureaucracy of time-consuming business processes. Guardian Media Group today announced a strategic partnership with Open AI, a leader in artificial intelligence and deployment, that will bring the Guardian’s high quality journalism to ChatGPT’s global users. Under the partnership, Guardian reporting and archive journalism will be available as a news source within ChatGPT, alongside the publication of attributed short summaries and article extracts. In addition, the Guardian will also roll out ChatGPT Enterprise to develop new products, features and tools. This announcement comes a year after the Guardian published its approach to AI, focused on ensuring that any use of genAI is under human oversight and for the benefit of its readers, its business and its wider mission. This considered approach to AI continues as the Guardian Media Group explores agreements with both existing and emerging businesses to ensure fair compensation and attribution for its journalism.
