Great news for folks wanting a networked version of Better Call Saul's sex toilet, I guess

Here's hoping this doesn't lead you to start sexting with a terrible person who is also old enough to be your grandparent

Above around 158 or so, and there's little evidence of superiority - i.e., a person with a 175 and a 160 both do similarly. Below around 154, and the bar exam is typically a struggle.

Obviously there are individual outliers in all directions
December 3, 2025 at 7:32 PM
This is true, but it's also true that there's not a great deal of functional difference between scores at a micro level. There are three buckets, broadly speaking: "will do just fine on the bar exam," "should not go to law school," and "gray area," which is basically a score in the mid-150s

Yeah, I agree with this - in the better world:

- standardized tests don't matter so much;
- and we design better tests so they aren't timed;
- and we live in a world where the fancy tutor works with anyone who wants it.

We are so far from that world that it's hard to even see it though 😔

The ethics are bad, but the writing is worse!

P.S. I was obviously a part of the hypocrisy because I took the parents' money and tutored the kids.

If I had good ideas about fixing this in a systemic way, I'd suggest them. It's a difficult situation, and I fear a coming backlash against all disabled folks bc of rich kids' abuse of systems
December 3, 2025 at 3:58 PM
I don't support draconian restrictions on access for disabled folks, of course, but I also don't think it's as simple as "ah well, some people will make poor choices"

Extra time makes the LSAT much easier, and every rich kid gaming the system is a spot not going to someone else (inc. the disabled!)
December 3, 2025 at 3:55 PM
One job I've had in the past is as a high-end LSAT tutor. Basically all of my former students got extra time on the LSAT, because there is an entire infrastructure dedicated to making sure rich kids have extra time on standardized tests.

Priority if there's a fire at my house:

1. People and cats
2. My boxes of important/sentimental papers
3. Library of America books

After WW2 people literally were executed by firing squad for doing so
December 3, 2025 at 3:49 AM
This was my guess as well
December 3, 2025 at 2:58 AM
Recall, though, that it's not shifting from 0, but from a national environment that favored Rs by 2.6% (national House vote). So it would be an environment favoring Dems by a little over 12%, which of course is still huge

You know who else used dubious historical arguments to justify the wanton slaughter of civilians?
December 3, 2025 at 2:39 AM
I think you have the right idea. In general, to defeat a big partisan lean, you need either a below-the-radar race or a Roy Moore-level toxic candidate. I expect a good showing but not good enough to win in a very Republican district

Now this piece I knew - it's measuring relative rates! I wrote a law review article on partisan gerrymandering 20 years ago, so I know the subject reasonably well - just didn't realize R+10 meant 60-40 (relative to national vote) and not 55-45!
December 2, 2025 at 7:49 PM
Holy shit, it IS right! Thank you for the correction
December 2, 2025 at 5:42 PM
Holy shit, is that right? If so, I have been thinking of it incorrectly for like 20 years!

HELL YEAH, I one-upped the writer man 😄

Of course this is a huge and legit concern, but every day it gets more likely that it would be a Bush-Katrina situation and less likely to be a Bush-9/11 situation
