WPCH is a community-centred police abolitionist group committed to defunding the WPS and reallocating resources to life-sustaining services. https://winnipegpolicecauseharm.org
The scene presented in the ASIRT report doesn't line up. The first shot (marker 1) was fired when Afolabi was at least 15 ft away (marker 5). The knives were found on the other side of the unit (marker 7). The partner claims she "moved the knives away."

Assuming this is true, how would it in any way justify the level of violence used during this arrest? How will inflicting more trauma on someone help prevent this from happening again? How will further criminalization promote healing and well-being? How else might this have been avoided or resolved?

The Winnipeg subreddit has better analysis on this issue than anyone that CBC interviewed for this article

75% of prisoners in Manitoba's jails are on remand, awaiting trial. This is the system that politicians like Scott Gillingham and Matt Wiebe only want to make worse. A catastrophe that has no relation to improving safety.

One of the stunning poems El Jones presented at last night's community dinner following the International Day Against Police Brutality rally + march. She also shared this poem in the West Bank on a recent solidarity trip.

Apologies for the poor video quality, the poem itself surely makes up for it!

Kim from Anakbayan Manitoba is speaking in solidarity with all those who face police brutality around the world, and connects police violence in Winnipeg with the vicious police and military terror in the Philippines #IDAPB2025

From a Reddit thread generating a list of "the MAGA local business' and influencers in Winnipeg" to name + shame.

This is who Gillingham and EPC just hand another $15 million/year to, along with a new helicopter and armoured vehicle.

Also this is factually inaccurate. Most vehicular events the helicopter is dispatched to are not "chases" but "follows," or when the vehicle is observed but not pursued.

In 2022, there were 9 traffic pursuits and 50 follows.

Oh, and the top event? WELL-BEING CHECK, with 192.

Given that proposed WPS chief Gene Bowers is in the news for unspecificed allegations, check out this report that he wrote of a recent trip to New Zealand, when he had to "fight my police instincts not to react tactically" during a Maori welcoming ceremony

Here's a chance to tell the City that you oppose its proposed increase of $15.1 million to the WPS in 2025.

Many other municipal services - transit, libraries, recreation - are set to continue languishing to benefit some 1,300 cops who don't actually keep anyone safe.

We have prepared a leaflet for sharing about the proposed 2025 WPS budget.

Please help share it. We need to get the word out to as many people as possible about this massive theft of public resources.

It's available as a printable download on our site: winnipegpolicecauseharm.org/resources/

Another year, another round of Bartley Kives misrepresenting the police budget.

Property tax revenue is increasing by $52.2 million in 2025. City funding of the WPS is increasing by $15.1 million - not a mere $1.9 million, as he claims.

"Unspecified city operations" - come ON.

Update haha
December 12, 2024 at 12:11 AM
The WPS' interim chief is predictably celebrating today's budget as "great news."

The "cop-to-pop" ratio that he and Gillingham invoke is a completely bogus metric. There's no evidence behind it, nor any goal of what a desired ratio is. Pure copaganda.
