We’re looking after our friends’ dog Penny over Christmas, and we had them all over today so she could have a look around the house and give her final approval to the arrangement. We think the new pig toy swung the deal. She’s quite a character.

I’ve had a very long day at work, but I’ve got back to this World Cup draw and now work looks like a more attractive option. Anyway, it’s definitely time.

I’ve cheered myself up by buying a big new desk and rearranging my study. For a few days, I can entertain the fantasy that thanks to this change, everything I do from this desk will be a masterpiece. I’ll give it till Monday before the feeling wears off.

Shepherd was also blessed with one of the great faces of the late 20th century with his sunken eyes, insane cheekbones, and puckered lips. I love this photo of him because he looks like he’s suddenly remembered that he has children.

RIP Jack Shepherd. One of the greats. He’s most famous for Wycliffe, but his legacy goes way beyond that, particularly with his performance as the eponymous Bill Brand in Trevor Griffiths’ brilliant series, and also for being the original Ricky Roma in Glengarry Glen Ross.

I was reading various articles about Anthony Hopkins over breakfast this morning, and this extract intrigued me. I wonder which film he’s talking about? Juggernaut with Richard Harris, David Hemmings, and Omar Sharif in the cast seems possible except it’s a great film. Any other candidates?
