Generally true, but you can tell when a writer just...genuinely loves a particular obscure word, as it's sprinkled all over -- and used seamlessly and correctly in -- their ouvre.

My medieval lit degree absolutely helped me in my case manager and legal liaison positions before I taught.

My dad organized his 50th hs reunion in 2008 (class of '58) and it was indeed held partially in the old gym.
