Critical histories of science and medicine, science studies, postcolonial endeavours. New book on modern excrementalities: Spectacles of Waste (Polity). Writing mostly on disease ecologies and planetary health now. Living on Wangal country.
Pleased to see (thanks to Heekyong Burge) my latest book There Is No Such Thing as Western Science: The Challenge from Postcolonial Science and Technology Studies, collected and translated by Jongsik Yi (Wonju: Eum, 2025) - available in good Korean bookstores. Not in English!

This is surprising. Nice of course, but an unexpected endorsement from The Australian, the Murdoch flagship. Delightfully ironic also that I'm now in an anthropology program! And no doubt many colleagues could challenge the claim...

Wish they also had the Marxist summer school programs! I found a program for the Sydney History Dept's 1970 Marxist summer school in the papers of a president of the Royal Society (he'd participated). How times have changed

The details of these talks are in this poster:

Turns out the posters for 81 and 82 were even more fetching. As Cathy says, they had to be alluring as the Sydney Marxists gathered in January, prime beach weather...

In doing some research for a talk on the influence of 1980s radical Sydney (esp corporeal feminism) and AIDS activism on the work in STS of @cwaldby.bsky.social, learned about her 1st academic talk (1983) at the annual Marxist summer school - see poster

Looking forward to the celebration of Cathy Waldby's brilliant career in Canberra next week. Though I'm inclined to speak on radical Sydney and AIDS last century - not biovalue and reproduction!

Honored to be awarded the 2025 Arthur J Viseltear Prize for lifetime achievement in public health history from @apha.org Sadly, wasn't in DC to receive it - worried about crossing the border. Sent a video acceptance!

Delighted that long-term research fellow in planetary health humanities at USyd, Dr James Dunk, is moving upwards to be director of the St James Institute, a humanities and policy institute associated with the Sydney Anglican Church.

My co-author Ian Mackay wryly predicted this award some 15 years ago, as we were writing Intolerant Bodies:

When Ian Mackay and I wrote our history of autoimmunity we focused on several diseases, but not ALS. If it were ever revised there would be so much more to include now!

Our Lancet viewpoint, 'Bioethics for the Planet', seems ever more timely. Caring for humans and all life forms demands we care also for the planet. Viewable with registration
