Electrical engineer working on the grid. I have opinions about energy, climate, transport, housing, and politics. YIMBY. #EnergySky

Here's our standard. ANSI C84.1. 110 is technically *just barely* allowed/within Range A at a wall outlet, but we're aiming for 114-126 at the transformer terminals. For a single point of reference, I usually average around 120-122v at my house.

So here's the actual formula for determining minimum efficiency, and because it's weird math, here's what it means for a few common sizes (in DOE rating):

5000 BTU - 6.1 CEER
8000 BTU - 7.2 CEER
10000 BTU - 7.8 CEER
12000 BTU - 8.4 CEER

Still pretty garbage tbh, but better than no regulation.

Here's the proposed ruling, & there's one bit that sticks out. "No significant impact on supply, distribution, or use of energy." Bro, as a PNW grid engineer, I can confidently say these things are squashing us on peak. Local sub is like 2 MW from overloading during heat waves. tinyurl.com/mszsckhr

Here's their definition.

It's this part here. They're explicitly banned from installing air conditioning.

Murdering from their pollution? Switzerland has some of the cleanest power in Europe. It's all hydro and nuclear. There is no pollution from running an AC there.

And if you're too uncultured to get the reference...

Shit if I were in Paris right now I'd really be hankering for AC, a high of 90 and an overnight low of 67 is *rough*

Nobody in that city is getting a good night of sleep tonight.

I don't think they'll ever come for anything in the US but yeah could definitely see it in some areas of the world. It's a part of our culture at this point.

Because electric meters are ugly I guess, this vacation home place has them hidden behind openable panels. I’m surprised the local utility was okay with this tbh.

Interrupting my Bluesky break to share this incredibly specific and well targeted meme my friend sent me.

I keep seeing people posting their top movies of the 21st century. Here’s mine, feel free to judge.

Ngl this was surprisingly difficult. I ended up going for stuff that I will still find enjoyable no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

$139 at Walmart and you’ll be able to keep a single room at tolerable temps. Definitely worth considering.
June 24, 2025 at 4:14 AM
They need to make fridges for single dudes that are like half freezer instead of 1/3 freezer. I’m perpetually almost out of freezer room but always have plenty of space in the fridge.
June 23, 2025 at 8:54 PM
Well that sucked, but hey, blinds.

I don’t necessarily believe words make a flag bad (again, huge fan of the California flag) but this is just lame. The beaver on the back is slightly better but still needs more.
June 15, 2025 at 3:49 PM
Blame it on us being Americans, lol. Here’s what the box says.
June 8, 2025 at 4:43 PM
Is it ugly? Yes. Is it held in using masking tape and scrap wood and the window sash because I didn’t want to drill holes in my house? You bet! Will it keep my office nice and cool? 100%.
June 8, 2025 at 4:22 PM
Feel free to judge. Harshly.
June 6, 2025 at 2:16 PM
Found it in the manual. Reliance does not claim hybrid mode is more efficient than heat pump mode.
June 4, 2025 at 5:17 AM
Huh, well, it exists in website form at least. And with it we can confirm 1966 for the globe (Botswana shows up in 1967). geacron.com/home-en/

AC cycles are getting longer and closer together oh no
May 31, 2025 at 12:29 AM
23%, yeah, but idk how evenly distributed it is. A lot of the hydro capacity is out west and a lot of nuclear is in the eastern half.

Huge improvement over bare dirt and copious weeds though. Kinda worth it in the end.

Just one more lane bro did not work.
