honestly? whatever DSLR you can pick up for cheap at a yard sale.
beyond that i hear the Canon EOS 5D Mark II is a pretty good starter (though you will have to wrangle CF cards instead of SD cards).
i am a purebred canon girlie so i don't know much about other brands however...
