Commander Vimes didn’t like the phrase “The innocent have nothing to fear,” believing the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term even more from those who say things like “The innocent have nothing to fear.”
It is twinned with 'the evil people are all in league and in control of everything'. Much harder to face the cumulative effect of chaotic, bad decisions by different powerful people and institutions, none of whom really have a clearly worked out plan or shared goals.

No you see they're setting a target that only 60% of critical minerals can be supplied by China. While acknowledging China controls 90%. So actually they've considered your objection and taken bold steps to overcome it!

The missing piece of the puzzle is it's not the left getting elected it's the 'sensible centre', who govern according to what they think a theoretical marginal voter already wants rather than trying to make the case for ideals or transformative values or a new settlement for workers.

I agree it's massively in your face online but 'twas ever thus, honesty. Men policing gender performativity in other men is a core experience for most growing up, particularly including how you are supposed to think of and treat women and girls

But wasn't it the result of strategizing and targeting voters, just manifesting differently? The conservatives, for example, making a conscious effort to shake off the 'nasty party's image. Hell, even the BNP had a sort of go at trying to seem more respectable. But it was all still lurking there.

Really? It seems to me there are a lot of pent up racists and misogynists (both here but especially in the US) who feel they've been prevented from giving voice to their 'traditional values' through the 90s and early 2000s and are now giddy with the perceived permission to let fly.

Literally 1st Google result, via Politico:
“Climate change is an existential issue,” she said. “I’m part of the generation where, when we’re asked what we want to do when we grow up, we have to think about climate change, where we’re going to live, what we want to do, how it’s going to impact us"

It is clearly driven by infinite monkeys typing in a pocket dimension and sadly the costs of maintaining this setup increase exponentially. Don't worry though, useful output is pretty much guaranteed, eventually

This is right, but I think exposure to so much online doom also amplifies feelings of hopelessness too because we're so disconnected from what we're reading about, story after story.

And Sauron, sitting in his black seat in the midst of the Temple, ..., even as he laughed at his own thought, thinking what he would do now in the world, being rid of the Edain for ever, he was taken in the midst of his mirth, and his seat and his temple fell into the abyss.
