So I kept getting older, but I knew I wasn't as old as I'd ever been. I often have memories surface in my mind, that I realize are from the lost twenty years, and not from my real life. So, tomorrow I will be 43--for the first time, and older than I've ever been, for the first time in 20 years. 5/5

These memories felt and still feel real. As I've been approaching 43 this week, I wonder: when i wake up tomorrow, will I be in Gainesville? Back in Wichita, KS where I was in that coma? It's a wild thing to think. I got better, and had to learn to walk again after many bedridden months 4/5

It took about an hour to convince me I wasn't -- they brought me a daily paper & more, During the coma, I had been in a persistent lucid dream-like state. I lived what I thought had been another 20 years of my life. I divorced my wife, met and married another woman -- opened a business of my own 3/5

It lasted almost a month (they tried waking me a few times) but, each time my lungs would fail. I was intubated, and on a ventilator, and they couldn't get me off. Eventually, after four weeks, they were able to wake me up. When I awoke, I thought I was 42 years old. 2/5
