According to the political scientist Martin Gilens "under most circumstances, the preferences of the vast majority of Americans appear to have essentially no impact on which policies the government does or doesn't adopt".

When historical anarchists like Kropotkin critiqued prisons they didn't rely on just abstract arguments or research. They also drew upon their own experiences of being imprisoned for engaging in radical activity. Their opposition to prisons was grounded in what they are actually like.

Is America a democracy? A 2014 study by Gilens and Page found that "economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while mass based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence".

Fun Kropotkin fact: at a banquet of the royal geographical society of London the chairman proposed a toast to the king and everybody rose. Kropotkin alone remain seated. A true hater.

In 1874 the Russian anarchist Bakunin participated in an unsuccessful insurrection in Italy. He escaped the police and reached Switzerland by shaving off his large beard and disguising himself as a priest wearing dark glasses, with a cane in one hand and a basket full of eggs in the other.

I always find it amusing that in public discourse western powers are "governments" and the rest of the world are "regimes".

In 1844 an obscure young journalist advocated the achievement of “universal human emancipation” and “the transition to the human world of democracy”. This journalist, who was a victim of state censorship, was an avid supporter of freedom of the press, speech, and assembly. His name was Karl Marx.

Too many liberals respond to problems by putting their hope in the next election. The result is a feeling of passivity and powerlessness. Politicians aren't going to save us. We have to save ourselves and take direct action. Doing so builds our collective strength and ability to change the world.

Thinking about when Larry Diamond, a liberal academic apologist for US imperialism, conceded in his book 'ill winds' that the government "often has deep ties with autocratic regimes because they have things we want - typically oil" or "security cooperation".

Between 1880 and 1914 the main social movement that called themselves, their newspapers and their organisations communist was anarchism. Marxists at the time preferred to use the language of socialism, social democracy, workers' party, collectivist etc. This changed due to WW1 and Russian revolution

In Marxism the word communism refers to a stateless classless society. This was not originally the case. In the 19th century the term had a much broader meaning and referred to collective ownership in general. This is why anarchists in the 1870s advocated anarchy (stateless) plus communism.

Marx's alternative to capitalism went by many names, which he used interchangeably. The most famous are socialism and communism. Lesser known ones from Capital are "an association of free men" and a "society in which the full and free development of every individual forms the ruling principle".

This election result isn't about Dem messaging.

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz formed a balanced ticket filled with character, intellect, and genuine love for this country, and they delivered their vision beautifully and eloquently.

People keep asking if the mass deportations are going to happen, isn't it illegal, how is using the military on U.S. soil constitutional, etc.

Yes, they're going to happen. It doesn't matter if it's illegal or unconstitutional. All that matters is whether enough soldiers will follow his orders.
