It’s me!
Every totalitarian state has its own academia, and no one outside it can trust that its grades and faculty positions mean anything other than a sign of government favor.

“Precocious child narrator” is an entire subgenre with its own multiple subgenres.

Look at the curriculum and work expectations of a doctorate in higher ed, and then compare them to any other professional doctorate.

It’s genuinely clarifying.

I think The Constitution is increasingly dead letter law, and we just aren’t at the stage of acceptance where our conversations reflect it.

I haven’t taught a class since the pandemic, but that was my experience at the community college level.

Students went to school for a better life, but the increasing demands of the lives they had were draining them.

Too many people are mentally still at “We’ll sort this out after we win the presidency again.”

I was good enough at it to get the grades I needed for college, but it was taught and felt like a necessary chore.

Math ability has a major sorting function in our society.

You advance according to your overall school scores, and that includes taking harder math courses than the average if you want to go to college.

Parents latch onto math ability as a sign of worth and adults see it as their main identity.

Also, actual cocaine.

We are seeing how unchecked wealth and power, rampant substance abuse and imperial decay go together.

They primarily offer a class sorting service to give the national media a hiring pool so that they don’t have to sully themselves and hire from local papers and TV.

Look at all the Red state flagships and secondary schools - MAGA board and chancellors serving MAGA legislators and governors - are quietly saying “no” to this.

It’s a trap.

It hits C.K. hard because there was a period when he replaced David Foster Wallace as the go-to guy for literate dudes who wanted to be seen as enlightened.

The missing word is “disreputable.”

He’s the equivalent of a strip club now. Makes cash hand over fist, but the entire audience knows they gotta keep quiet about the show.

From the ancient world to Victorian England, being involved in business was seen as shady, at best, to outright disqualifying for the nobility.

The stereotype was that merchants were useful monsters ruled by personal self interest and needed to be kept far as possible from governance.

It’s a systemic “we” talking about issues at an institutional level in detail. There’s no way to have discussions about behavior without discussing the behavior.
November 29, 2025 at 1:32 PM
That’s where the drama is in reality, too.

All the “sane and stable” functionaries who turn rancid when ruled by tyrants. People who are supposed to be backstops and complex humans reverting to their own Wormtongue/Eichmann caricatures.

It’s The Tin Drum. The adults go all insane in a tyranny.

I work in an R1 and am hearing the same thing said about faculty and postdocs working on major grants. Total burnout and collapse in populations that didn’t historically show those signs.

Someone has to raise the cry that’s something is going on.

Weird freaks.

I, Claudius is a great example of this done well.

The engine of the plot is how to live around powerful, brutal and often absurd people who enjoy killing to get their way or in a fit of pique.

What we are re-learning is that the caricature’s of tyrants and fascists are accurate descriptions. They’re just like that.

It’s why they routinely create horrors.

White House reporters aren’t victims, for fuck sake.

And yeah, I guess I’m another “idiot.” Blocked.

The first trades of Marvel’s Star Wars by Jason Aaron and the Kieron Gillen’s Darth Vader are where the Marvel books kicked off, and they are still a high point.

The Phillipines and Mexico were also Vietnams. We just memory holed those two dirty wars.
