They definitely need to inform faculty because people are going to wonder why they are getting ghosted from past group members!

I mean, every university is getting squeezed, but to pull this right before the holidays with a short deadline to change a TONNE of stuff is just not it.
Already without library access, getting this pulled and losing track of emails in the process is making publishing even more difficult than it is
