August 22, 1883 The Toronto Daily Mail A CANADIAN STEEL WORKS The furnace of the Nova Scotia Steel Works at Trenton was lit a few days ago, and the work of manufacturing steel has already commenced. The works are conveniently situated on the bank of the East River, a short distance below Smelt Brook, between the river and the line of the Intercolonial railway. During the past year the work of construction and collecting machinery has been in prtocress, and the establisment is now pretty well equipped. The Nova Scotia Steel Company was formed on the 12th of April 1882. The situation chosen is an admirable one, for, in addition to the proximity to the coal mines and the iron deposits of the East river, the facilities for shipment by rail or water are unsurpassed. A siding has been built connecting the fac-tory and the coal sheds with the Intercolonial railway. and a steam travelling crane of ten tons capacity running through the main building moves all heavy weights from place to place when required. The buildings, which are suitable and substantial structures, cover nearly one and a half acres of ground, giving ample room for carrying on their work. The furnaces are capable of turning out some 9,000 tons of steel per annum.

LOSSES in the AMERICAN TRADE THE infatuation that has prevailed since the peace, of immense exportations to the late rebel colonies, has now ceased; and the sanguine ideas of speedy fortunes in the American trade are evaporating in bankruptcy. The folly of rushing out with valuable cargoes of goods, and of giving unlimited credit to the inhabitants of an exhausted country, who really never were able to pay, and what is more, never were willing, are now the subjects of melancholy contemplation, to the mortified, disappointed tradesmen, and the ruined exporter. The old and substantial houses that had survived the shock of their former connections with American defaulters, were too wise, from dear-bought experience, to listen to the crowd of American customers that poured into the country, at the close of the war. These houses with a true mercantile intuition, modestly and cautiously declined to risk their own property, and that of the numerous tradesmen, who placed an implicit confidence in their commercial transactions. The fine speeches, on the returning goodwill of America, and the high value of her commerce made to them by [unreadable] adventurers, had not the least effect; they knew that an impoverished country could not pay; and that those who, in 1775, had resolved not to pay their old debts, were not likely to become honester by new credits. Our American customers, thus rebuffed at the fountain-head, then swarmed over the land; and succeeded but too well among the ill-informed tradesmen and manufacturers of the country towns, where they metamorphosed many an honest tradesman in a foreign exporter.

The subject of the piracies in the vicinity of Cuba bas teen taken up by the congress, and he president recommends the extension of the power of the executive to meet the commercial emergencies arising from the imbecile conduct of the government of Cuba We are reminded by this of the cautious yet deliberate advances, which a cat sometimes makes to captivate a robin or canary. Cuba, rich, but defenceless, naturally awakens the desire of conquest, and will perhaps, in a short time, become the prize of audacious enterprise.
