Reading The Lonesome Dove Books in chronological order of the events rather than the book’s release dates. Dead Man’s Walk and Comanche Moon are really excellent books, and the latter beautifully evokes the end of the old west. But Lonesome Dove itself is an unimpeachable classic.

I liked Apache Rifles.
It is a film built for mid-budget efficiency. William Witney directs with his usual Western ease, especially in the punchy action sequences, and works well in tandem with a tight and morally relevant script by TV specialist Charles B. Smith.

Made me want to re-read Afterward by Edith Wharton, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, almost immediately.

First watch: Certain Women. Another major Kelly Reichardt blindspot plugged, this 2016 anthology film based on three short stories by Maile Meloy. Although very loosely connected, these are in many ways standalone shorts linked by a mood, pace, and the wide-open spaces of Montana. 1/3
