(For those fortunate enough to never have to have dealt with it, US extraterritorial taxation for citizens and green card holders living abroad is a real beast. I am not looking forward to dealing with it again when I relocate back to Asia in 2026.)

Related, I was in Amsterdam for work this week and was talking to a German guy who’d got a green card after studying in the US years ago and later surrendered it for tax reasons after returning to Europe and is now very reluctant to try to travel back to the US.

Absolutely amazing how fast the whole tone of our green card interview changed when that little hiccup was resolved.

Anyway, good thing we had our original marriage cert with us at the interview, in the (compared with today) relatively immigrant-friendly Obama years.

Not our typo! Someone at USCIS had incorrectly entered the year of our marriage into their system as “2012” instead of “2002.” But the assembled documentation was something like 150 pages And there were plenty of opportunities for mistakes.

I think that was generally true. When I moved to SH in 2007, there were better western options. Although I think things converged after the Olympics.

That’s made me think about those days, the experience of being a kid in the Castro, and how opaque a parents fears can be to children.

This has happened to me, by the way! Even with banal emails and lawyers I knew it was uncomfortable. In an adversarial situation with high stakes? Oof.
